Arrow Burning smell when A/C compressor is running

Just recently, last few days, noticed my A/C compressor making a weird sound, like a bearing going bad or something. Then the other night when out on a joy ride I smelled a burning rubber like smell. Drove the car the next day with no A/C on and didnt smell or hear anything. My wife drives it to work a few days a week about an 80 mile round trip each time. I asked her today, and she said she smelled the same smell again when the A/C was on, so she turned it off. I just had the system recharged about a week ago. They put a can of stop leak in it cause a week before I had put an 18oz can of 134A in and it all leaked out. Air is nice and cold now since the recent recharge and stop leak was addes. Could the compressor be going bad, or the clutch, etc. What could it be, and what should I do.

Arrow Belt

The first thing I would look at is the belt. If the belt looks fine then maybe move on to more $ problems.

When inspecting the belt, be sure it's properly tensioned. Could be it's slipping on the pulley only when the compressor is imposing a load, simply because it's too loose.

If it's a rubber smell, then it's probably a belt. When th A/C is used, it allows fresh air to enter the car. Try using the fan only to see if the smell is still there.

Besides checking the bent and tension, I would also suggest checking the high and low side pressures. Its easy for a shop to add refrigerant and end up with too much non-compressible fluid in the system. Make sure the low side is around 28 psi. For what its worth, even I put in about 2oz too much last weekend and had to have a friend with an R-134 recovery machine pull out a bit.
