Has anyone installed a new CD player? Or should I take it somewhere and have it done?
thanks! Michelle |

Many of us have and there are helpful walkthroughs available in the "SVXipedia" on http://svx-iw.com/ on how to do so.

I installed a new CD player/radio in my SVX a few years ago. I had NEVER installed a car radio before, and using the information from this site I was able to do the whole job in about 3 hours. The most time consuming part was cutting and stripping all of the wires from the factory harness and matching them to the wires from the new unit. The wires on the new unit were all labeled, but I had to download and print a chart of what all the wires in the car's harness were for. Just remember: there are two antenna cables on the SVX. One is for the power antenna, the other is for the window embedded antenna. Both of these cables can easily be disconnected by pulling down the carpet on the drivers side of the center console, near the ashtray area. Disconnect both of the black antenna wires under there. Other wise you won't be able to pull the old radio out.

Be sure to get the SVX wiring harness from SVXdc. The link to the thread and pictures can be found HERE
You want the SVX 'forward' harness. Price is $14 plus shipping. It mates with the SVX's radio plug (all model years). Use it to install any stock radio in your SVX (solder or crimp this harness to the harness that comes with your new radio). This harness allows you to install a new radio without cutting or splicing into your car's wiring. No one else makes this and it is well worth the money! Even if you send it out to be done, it will make the installer's job a lot easier (and hopefully cheaper)

Yep,
Just ordered one of the harnesses as I will have to replace my stero in the near future as my cd player is about shot. Decided it was worth the $17 (with shipping) to not have to worry about wire being cut etc....Not sure if I will do the install myself or not, will depend on when and where I get the new stereo. Either way it will make things eaiser.

[ADDED]: If you print mine, you'll only see the little "thumbnail" versions of the pictures. When you view the guide online, you can click them to see larger pictures. [/ADDED] Definitely get my SVX Wiring Adaptor ('forward harness), whether you do the whole installation yourself or not. An 18" antenna extension is the ideal length. If you can't find that then use 24". It really isn't that difficult to do yourself. I think more of the effort is spent making sure you don't scratch up your interior and dash, something that car stereo shop installers aren't always as careful about. If you're not comfortable connecting the wiring harneses (soldering or crimping), you might farm out that part -- the store that sells you your new radio might do that for little or no fee -- and still do the physical installation yourself. If you get stuck, I'm always happy to answer questions.

Kellogg Idaho huh. I live in Caldwell and did my own install. Little tricky, but I would be willing to do it under two circumstances. One, you drive to me and two, a little spending cash thrown my way. What are you looking to do, full audio in trunk or replace just the stereo. I work for cheap too. Throw me $20 for the stereo and $50 for the whole shebang and you got a deal. Oh yeah, you buy all the wiring, my supply is running low if you want the rumble in the trunk. Let me know.
