Question May have to part with SVX

Hi all,

Got some bad news today from my mechanic. I took my 92 SVX with 95,000 miles in because it sat for 3 weeks and then wouldn't start. Also was leaking some fluids. I was expecting to need a new battery or alternator, but nothing too major. Apparently, I was overly optimistic.

Mechanic says I need:

new alternator (current one overcharging battery)
new steering rack (current is leaking)
also leaking are the oil pump, valve gaskets, transmission pan, etc.
left front axle boot is torn
both back wheels are bent (how does this happen?)
I think he also mentioned new rotors for front or back

He says it would cost approx. $2200 - $2500 just to fix the problems that would cause it to fail inspection. To fix everything, he's estimating $5000.

Any ideas? I don't think the car is even worth $5,000, so I guess I will have to say goodbye and look for something new.

Sharon

Find a new mechanic. His estimates are ridiculous.

The wheels get bent by running into pot holes. The bent rear rims where most likely in the front at one time. The bent rim, dependiing on how bad it is, will cause the car to vibrate. Also depending on how fast you go.

Yeah I would agree that is quite high but I think he's near Philly where everything cost's more

I'd say you're looking at a good $1500 with used wheels and definately a used steering rack (if that is really the problem). If the steering rack is only leaking a bit you may be able to clean it or dirty it up a bit and take it elsewhere and it'll pass inspection. That's where most of the price is coming from. I'd bet he's saying about $1200 for that alone!

Like I said I'd be interested if you think that it'll be too much for your budget to fix. I've always been partial to the clarets. The only thing is I hate the auto belt things.

I'm sure you can find a steering rack for less than $1200. You could always have a reputable shop rebuild yours for a lot less than that.

There is a TSB regarding a transmission fluid return hose that would drip down and make it look like the steering rack was the source of the leak.

A possible $5 fix to what may seem to be a $1200 problem.

BTW, I can get a reman rack here in TO for $375CDN.
