Wanted: replacement SVX motor

Looks like my SVX won't be on the road any time soon.

After waiting a month for parts to arrive, we got it back together today only to find there's terminal internal damage.

The car's been off the road for years, and after it's first shakedown run, the fuel pressure regulator went (I fully expected small issues, so no prob there). However overnight it filled the entire engine with fuel, and it turns out that the resulting hydraulic lockup the next morning when I went to start it has caused havoc inside.

So... who's got a new motor for me?

I could happily use this as an excuse to go turbo or supercharged. So hit me with your ideas.

Interesting..........

I have attempted to start engines that have filled up with coolant due to a bad head gasket - they have hydrolocked, but once the plugs have been removed and the cylinders cleared, they have not suffered any damage.

Normally, the relatively low speed at which the engine is turning over at while cranking should not be fast enough to cause any damage if the engine is hydrolocked.

Once, when I had my old 1986 Vortex (I miss that car...), I sprayed too much Upper Engine Cleaner into the intake, and hydrolocked 3 of the 4 cylinders when I attempted to start it. Once I removed the plugs and cranked the engine over to clear the cylinders, everything was fine. The engine was simply not turning over fast enough while cranking to do any damage.

What happens when you attempt to crank the engine with the plugs removed?

Jason.

Yes surprised me too, especially since it never actually turned over at all (until the plugs were removed and cylinders cleared).

However a lot of it is brand new since I've just been refurbishing everything to get it back on the road. This includes new starter motor and battery... so that could explain it.

Re: Wanted: replacement SVX motor

Yes I would be suprised if it damaged anything in the erngine. I have heard of one that ran into water at speed, to bend rods, but on the starter, can't see it happening.
Tony ran into mud and water to stop the engine, and still drove it home.

Re: Wanted: replacement SVX motor

Won't know the exact problem until we get it open.

But it literally pumped oil out the left tail pipe. All exhaust joints are leaking oil, and there's no oil showing on the dip stick.

It's pumped minimum 5 litres of oil in about 30 seconds of turning over.

So surely it has to be a cracked block for that volume to move through?

cracked piston maybe? it could just be that the oil was over filled heaps, and its forced its way past the rings, also if an injector was leaking the fuel could have fotten past the rings and thinned down the engine oul, id drop the oil, fill with cheap 20 w 50 and try and run it, whats the worst that could happen? thanks, Ben.

Yes that's what we were thinking too.

Poured 8 litres in, none of which was showing on the dipstick after about 30 seconds of running.

But not giving up. Engine is coming out and being stipped down to find the exact answer.

Re: Wanted: replacement SVX motor

I would say head gasket around the wrong way, oil is coming out the head near the exhaust.
When I fill mine with mud I cleaned it out (didn't touch the heads) and still drove it for a further 130,000ks was using a little oil but still pulled 210kph with out much effort.

Wish it were that easy.

But no sadly the heads hadn't been off, so we're having to dig deeper.

But the engine is out, so hopefully it's coming apart tomorrow so we can see what secrets it's holding.

Re: Wanted: replacement SVX motor

Ok, so replacement maybe not needed after all.

Got the heads off today. Everything in one piece there.

But with the sump off, we could see at least one bent rod.

So maybe there's no structural damage to the block after all. Maybe the bent rod has offset the piston enough to have it acting like an oil pump.

We'll obviously know more when we get inside the block.

Re: Wanted: replacement SVX motor

Haven't cracked the block open yet, so still don't know for sure.

But yes I'm also super eager to find out exactly what went wrong.

Either way, at least I've got an excuse to do a complete rebuild and wind back 20yrs, right?

The resulting pic is so epic, it needs its own thread.

But not giving up... replacement motor located. We'll start getting it back together next week.
