need advice in troubleshooting

car died on the road today while driving, i tried to restart it, its turning over but not starting. i'm thinking it might be the fuel pump but i was wondering if i can get some insight as to what may be the cause

Crank/no starts can be a hundred different things. Last time for me was skipped timing. Can you hear your fuel pump coming on?

Re: need advice in troubleshooting

Next step is to confirm that you do or do not have voltage going to the pump with a multimeter. Test the harness that plugs into the pump. Positive lead goes to blue (12v from relay) and negative lead goes to black (tests ground as well). If you have 12V when you turn the key on, the pump is likely bad, if you dont get a voltage signal try putting your ground lead to a different, ground, no change then you're not getting voltage from the relay. For that you might have a bad fusible link or sometimes a bad relay. But test for voltage before condemning the pump.

Re: need advice in troubleshooting

When you check for voltage at the pump. Keep in mind that when you turn the key to start, it runs the pump for a few seconds, then cuts power until the car starts. So, you can't just turn the key to "run" and then go probing for voltage.

Can you hear the main and fuel pump relay clicking when you turn the key? They are up under the dash near the ECU.

The fuel pump is fairly quiet, you can't really hear it run unless you're trying.

Re: need advice in troubleshooting

If the key is turned on and you have voltage at the pump, but no fuel pumping out, the story is over! Replace the bad pump.

I usually listen for the gurgling of the fuel through the lines.

Re: need advice in troubleshooting

I hear you, both of mine have scary wiring under the dashes. Remote starters (that don't work), extra lights, power outlets.... EEEK!
