exhaust parts

i was just wondering what you guys thought are the best parts for a custom exhaust. cats, resonator(if needed), and mufflers.

Re: exhaust parts

I really love my exhaust that ot built for me. It was completly custom but we used magnaflows and ar20's. Its a good sound at a decent price. Seems to open up a little too.

Re: exhaust parts

you can get rid of the 2 precats and replace the main cat with a high flow cat

Re: exhaust parts

Id only do a true dual setup but maybe its cause I'm picky.

I have considered this before... I like Magnaflow's stuff (I have a Megan Racing cat-back with Magnaflow mufflers on my turbo Legacy. It sounds mean. not obnoxious, but not subtle, either.)

I would be tempted to try aeroturbine stuff, though, too. I would probably stay away from glass-packs like cherry-bombs, Thrush, or chambered mufflers like Flowmaster.

Big question would be...

stock manifolds -> short Aero resonators -> Magnaflow catalyzers...
Or
Long tube headers by Tom or someone else around here who knows fluid dynamics, and SVX issues, into catalyzers, with more/bigger resonators further down the line.

I'd probably try to use magnaflow high-flow cats, maybe even their spun-metal versions, rather than the crimped/welded shell versions...

I would probably try to stick to 2.0" or 2.25" pipe runs, true dual, all the way to the tips, but if that isn't a concern, you could use Aeroturbine or Magnaflow dual-in-dual-out mufflers as a center resonator box, in front of the differential.

With the long-tube header option, without resonators before the cats, I would maybe go with bigger mid-pipe resonator, or a bigger common resonator, compared to the stock-manifold with early-resonator style.

I would split the two runs around the rear differential, and splayed outward toward the tip outlets.

There are three main ways to run the mufflers. Short mufflers in the run between the diff and the rear tip location, inline. That would be the least backpressure, but the short mufflers would probably be a bit loud, if they aren't baffled.

The other would be same-side in and out, like a Porsche muffler, where the exhaust takes 2 90-degree bends into the outboard side of a muffler, and then back out, to the tip... the mufflers could be mounted with their blank-ends together in the center. One could do it similarly with a big dual-in and out muffler transversely, as well.

The other way would be individual mufflers, criss-crossing. basically two transversely mounted mufflers, flowing opposite directions. Left side muffler in goes to the right side exhaust tip, and vice versa, similar to the dual-in-dual out muffler, but with two discreet long mufflers.

The stock/Stebro method would be to find or fabricate a transverse muffler, with a side-input or two of them. Those are probably pretty rare other than stock or the Stebro muffler.

From there, it just depends on if you want aluminized steel pipework and mufflers, with crimp bends, and such, to keep costs down...

Or whether you go with name-brand parts, in stainless, with pre-bought, or custom-made mandrel bends, and stainless MIG or TIG welds, and spend a grand or so.

I've thought (dream-world, not preparing for actuality) of doing something like this as a two-mode with muffler bypass valves that dump directly into the tips instead of sending the flow through the rear mufflers when the valves open... that could be even more expensive. I'd hook that up 3-way, closed, auto (driven in common with the IRIS valve signal that opens the intake manifolds to each other), or full open at all RPMs.

It just kind of depends on what your goals are, and your budget.

Re: exhaust parts

the budget won't be that much of a problem. what im worried about is losing too much back pressure.

Re: exhaust parts

The way I have it set up is with stock headers and pre-cats. Then it runs 2" the whole way back to the exhaust tips where if ends at 2.5". The sound is aggressive but not annoying and buzzy.. Again, I think dual is the way to go..

I'd like to do a set of equal length headers and cut the cats out all together though but I can't really afford to do something so in depth yet so I didn't. If you can afford something like that, I'd say go for it.

I think it's a pointless waste of cash to be honest.

Good call. Its best not to rush into it and ask a lot of qualifying questions..
