That was my thought too.

I have sucessfully opened and serviced the installed bearing to repack it. I have three 235K original bearings to prove it works. I did it when the first bearing died at 70K and I didn't want to change one ever again. I used synthetic, High temp, roller bearing grease.

I have to concur with the packing grease feeling like vaseline...it felt a bit waxy to me. Regardless, all packing grease/wax is removed and fresh new wheel bearing grease is applied. I haven't had any recurring problems so far...knock on wood!
