Oil on top of engine block?

I went to look at 92 SVX today and when checking it out it had something, looked like oil, on top of the block under the intake manifold. I couldnt get a sample of it as we just got back from a drive and the engine was very hot. Where would this be comming from? I know the valve cover gaskets were going but they were leaking from the bottom of the engine, even if it was from the top I dont uinderstand how it got all over the top of the block.
Thanks
Jon

PCV valve is up there and it has oil running (well venting) through right up in that area.

The IRIS valve ussually leaks a little oil right in the center of the block. It shouldn't be anything to really worry about, it shouldn't be leaking that much it just builds up over time. I ussualy steam clean my engine once a year so it dosn't build up much over that time period.

Yep - IRIS valve is probably the culprit. Give it a good cleaning with some simple green and then see how much builds up. Root cause of the problem though could be excessive oil in the intake. I'd remove the intake boot and clean out the inside and also replace the PCV valve.
Does your oil dipstick pop up?

It seems a common occurrence, my car included. As long as it's minimal, you shouldn't let it put off an SVX that otherwise appears to be a good buy.

Well yeah, there is that. That will usually leave a much bigger puddle much faster, but like you say still not a big deal to fix.
