When does a survivor become a parts car

Honest and thoughtful opinions please

Looked at a 92 Claret this morning, owner has it for sale

He has been trying to sell for about two months now and has numerous offers to buy pieces of it. He has been reluctant to start breaking it up

Its third tranny is done, it has over 366,000 klm on it. He has owned it for over 10 years and has enjoyed it. He has spent plenty on new parts (new rad, new battery, claims a new rack, etc etc etc) all done at Mississauga Subaru, all original Subaru parts when possible at no small expense.

Interior is actually quite good, he claims everything works, battery was dead so I didn't get to test. It had been sitting since October.

Body is rough, plenty of rust in the usual places but no worse than several I've seen

He claims the engine runs great

Now the question

Do you part it out or restore it??

I will post the details in the cars for sale, with what pics I have

Every day I look at my Pearly, still resident in my driveway, I think of how quickly the amount I'd get parting it would be more than the amount I'd get selling it at a price that will take it from my driveway this year.

With the resale value of these cars, you really wind up in the balance of just how much you're willing to sacrifice in order to keep one more alive.

I suppose that sums it up

Assuming everything else on this car is what its claimed to be.

Bare bones this car needs:

Paint & body work - $3000
Transmission - $3000
Tires - $600
Misc leaks corrected - ????
Safetied- ????
Price - $1500

$8100 ++ is one hell of a lot of money for any 19 year old car with 366,000 klm on the dial

maybe 2200
tires id say 400-500
saftey-etest= 95
body work sure 3000
price 1500 i'm sure can barter down.

Re: When does a survivor become a parts car

I guess it all comes down to the car, and what the buyer or owner is willing to put into it to keep it on the road or not part it out. At one time, parts were not as common as they are now. People parted them because they could get quite a bit for parts. They still can be parted out and a profit made, but I don't think parts are as much as they used to be.

I bought a 93 for $1,000 that had the right front corner smashed. When the owner had an estimate for the damage, it was $14,000. He knew that he could not do anything with the car, so decided to sell it, but really didn't want to have it parted out. I told him I could keep it on the road. I had an autobody class at the college I work for put a new front clip on it, use the parts that I had for it, and repaint it. It cost me about $2,500 for supplies and parts for the project and with the $1,000 I paid for the car, I have $3,500 in it. It is driveable now and still on the road.

Now, that is not the normal situation. The only reason I went to such an effort to keep it on the road was because it is a 93 and in such good condition. Normally it would have been parted out. It is a big hassle to pull parts off, package them and ship them off to people. Some people have the room to store a car and can do that, but some can't.

Again, I think it depends on the car (good condition or not) and the owner who is willing to put the required money into it. Usually it costs much more then the low resail that these cars go for. If they were collectors cars, it would help. I don't know if they will ever see the higher values of other older cars, but most of us are loyal to them and try to keep them on the road because they are rare in comparison to other cars.

Thanks Earl ....... you`ve managed to tempt me. I have a son in law and who along with his brother do this sort of stuff for fun and as well as a profession. I might actually be able to convince myelf that a car wih a truly excellent interior will make a worthy restoration project. Will have to find the boys something to do when my touch up project is finished

Did I actually post this or did I dream it
