Re: Motor back in, crank like it has no compression.

YES there are two sets of dots. You have found your problem. take the cams out. turn crank to 0 degrees. Both driver side keyways should face down and both passenger keyways should face up. That is what I was going to recommend you check but tom beat me to it.

YES!

The top, intake cam has 1 dot, 180° away from the other dot, and the bottom, exhaust cam gear has 2 dots, 180° away.

Re: Motor back in, crank like it has no compression.

Sounds like your problems are solved by the experts here!

On another note, I had the same exact issue with another overhead 24v engine and the problem was the same: no compression. Solution was to turn the exhaust cam shaft so that the dots lined up. This was on a Toyota and also had the one dots and two dots!! I wonder if this is an universal thing with DOHC engines?

Good luck.

F*** off. I went out into the shop and immediately pulled the valve cover and saw them. Right side is reset and just needs the valve cover put back, then off to the left side.

A million thanks to both Toms. And to Subaru for making this motor non-interferance. Ah well, a learning experience.

Re: Motor back in, crank like it has no compression.

The pulleys are interchangeable side to side thus the 180* markings. it all comes to down cost of making the parts. This is why the intake cam is keyed to let you know how to install the cams.

Re: Motor back in, crank like it has no compression.

That's what I figured. In any case, the cams are now corrected, valve covers are back on, first thing tomorrow is to torque the cam pulleys, but the t-belt on and fire it. Then I can move on to fabbing up my new pre-cat pipes, which I had intended to do today.

Re: Motor back in, crank like it has no compression.

She runs!!!! The sound of an H6 running straight through the headers has never been so sweet. That's a hell of a lot of stress off.
