Not sure I agree with the comment about previous Subaru styling being "utilitarian" though.......

Phil.
I agree, Phil. Whoever wrote this article, especially this line: "Subaru's styling has always been utilitarian until now. The coupe could mark the start of a new era in which their cars look as good as they drive. " Is clueless about the SVX. Somebody needs to clue him in.

Yep, this is definitely something that was already on the design boards for Alpha when new leadership came around. Thrown together quickly to get a rise at the Geneva show. It'll be interesting to see if it comes anywhere near the production line, and what type of metamorphosis takes place in the interim. If they'd do something about that nasty Alphaesque grille and extend the stubby a$$, I might consider it.

It looks like an alpha, celica, and the z put together at the last minute. I'd still love to own it because it's not a production unit yet. Once it's produce I'll stick to my SVX thank you very much. I want to see the interior.

Guys do you notice something here. The concept colour is... pearl white...

Ok... Get this image out of your head

It's an EDSEL!...... a good car but remember how popular it was.... I predict a manufacturing run of 17,000 and hard to get parts again......

Lwin, that page links to a couple of photos of the interior.

The interior ... has some potential.

Subaru's Opening Up A New Front

his sensational new coupι is Japanese, but if you're thinking Honda or Toyota, you're not even close. The tiny badge on the front is the giveaway - this is a Subaru.

Codenamed B11S, the car will make its debut at next month's Geneva Motor Show. It's powered by a 3.0-litre flat-six engine and sports the company's famed four-wheel-drive system. This is the first large, luxury coupι the firm has built since it launched the SVX in 1992, and reflects the arrival of ex-Alfa designer Andreas Zapatinas. Coincidentally, the SVX was styled by Giugiaro at Italdesign, a company that's also enjoyed a long association with Alfa Romeo.

While the B11S hints at a future sports car from Subaru, it also signals a more wide-ranging change. Insiders say this look - including the bold front grille - represents a whole new design direction for the firm, which will have a serious impact on the company's next generation of cars. However, Subaru fans will have a long wait before such styling graces showroom models. The first car likely to sport this face is not due until at least 2007, when the current Impreza is replaced by an all-new machine. The revised nose won't have any impact on the new Legacy, revealed in last week's magazine and on sale later this year.

Interesting Car

The design is very common to Audi TT, Nissan’s Z and Lexus 300.

Not sure why they made it this way, but still there are certain similarities to those cars, and certain differences.
Although I don't particularly like the design, this car has some interesting lines, and standouts. (Nothing like the SVX's Window In Window Design).
So far the only thing I am interested in is the front Grill. It captures your attention and gives a car a certain stylish look.

Also, I think that the car is missing a hood scoop, and a spoiler. Although I am sure the designers considered that idea.

And for to end this post, a message to a designers, "Stick a double window in that concept!!!!!"

Thumbs up

WOW! The more I see of it the more I like it! The rear end is too much like the 350Z especially the tail lights. Lots of good photos there from all angles. The interior is pretty interesting. A little sparse with instrumentation but not too unlike our SVXes. I actually think it's pretty cool inside. I would take one especially with the specs FHI lists for it.

I really like this car. The interior isnt for me, but I'm sure if they made a production model, they would tone down that interior a little. I love that they put the ej30 in it, too.

I like some aspects of it and dont like some others. With a little tweaking in could definitely be a bad a$$ car. I agree with getting rid of the Alpha nose and have that grill go straight across. Also i agree that it needs a spoiler and i don't like the whole suicide door thing. It makes the side view with both doors open look a little cheap. And from the side i think the back half looks kinda like that of an MX-3. Altogther it has some potential but needs a lot of work to compare to the svx.

Grand Utility Tourer

Or GUT for short.

Doesn't look that heavy.

I would suggest:

New Outrageous Subaru Express,

the NOSE is the first thing everybody comments about.

Or how about GTO? But the O is not Omologato, but rather Orifice.

On second thoughts, I am maligning a few orifices here.

I love this car, but the nose has got to be fixed. Andy's article from Autoexpress mentions a "bold grill design" Not just bold, but downright impudent, I'm thinking.
