Re: Quarter panel rust repairs

Sean,

Looks like he's doing a great job in taking no more out then necessary.

Would you tell us the name of the body shop for those who may need it?

After looking at all the rot you had below the cladding, I was really surprised that area was so clean on my car. The guy working on it just had to go over it with a wire wheel to remove a tiny bit of surface rust so I think we caught that before it could become a problem.

Re: Quarter panel rust repairs

Yeah,

The drivers side was clean on mine too. The pass side was damaged because the mud guard was torn and there was a ton of sand and muck on the wrong side - naturally impregnated with road salt.

I got the last pair (in the US) of new rear arch protectors - still to be installed.

Which pieces are the arch protectors, the rubber edgeguard pieces or the plastic inner liner?

The rear arch protectors cover the edge of the fender lip and protect the painted surface from stone chips, etc.

Re: Quarter panel rust repairs

I was debating whether to put those on of not, my old ones are long gone. They may still be available despite what they told you.

Re: Quarter panel rust repairs

The edge guards seem to be available on Suburaparts.com, although I am going to hold off on them least until the repair is done. Thanks for the numbers SVXcess.

Here is picture of the new metal on the drivers side.

There seems to be a debate about whether they protect it or actually cause the issue. If you look at them, the backside has a flap that extends up and angles away from the quarter panel to sit in between the plastic inner well liner and quarter panel. Without it there is 1/4 gap between the plastic inner liner and quarter panel. It seems like the edge protectors are necessary to keep water away from that area. I am really not sure what's actually best, but I am leaning heavily towards the side of putting new ones back on.

Smile Re: Quarter panel rust repairs

My 2 pennies worth for the day - here in New Zealand we do not spend money on salt for winter roads (thank goodness for our location, and global warming!!).

Before you put the plastic quarter guards on, what about painting a rubberized sealant under the wheel arch area. I have done this on a couple of cars (under the whole body).

Rather than using an automotive underbody compound (super expensive here in NZ) - I used a concrete stone block sealer, like builders would use behind a block wall/swimming pool area - buying a couple of 10L containers for around NZ$100.

It normally is only available in black, so I mix a small container of paint (about 50-100ml) in order to give it some OEM under body colour.

It will protect any metal area that has the possibility of water damage....also it is a great sound deadener for road noise, or if you live in an area where there are unsealed (loose gravel) roads.

It is also a great filler - so it may actually stop the gap where the plastic does not meet the metal (just apply 2 or more coats for a bigger gap issue).

If you do decide that certain nuts/bolts etc may need working on in the future, you can thin it down initially (take a sample out to thin down) with what ever brush cleaner is required & then apply to the areas first, before applying the thicker stuff close to the nuts/bolts (but not over them).

Re: Quarter panel rust repairs

When I 1st got my SVX I stuck my finger behind the rubber guard. It was full of sand. I dug it out and slushed it with water. Mud poured out.
