It's also 7/8ths if you have SAE sockets.

Re: engine sqeak and overheat

theres the noise and the smoke (the belts rubbing). So, wonder why they are not running straight?

the belt has been rubbing the cover causing the squeak and causing the belt to smoke. So, find out why the belt is not running straight ( or sliding to one side) and you will find your problem. I am pretty sure that my cover also had a melted (rubbed) spot on it. when i bought my car, the water pump had locked up and broke the timing belt, but i bought it anyway. Glad i did because the shop changed it all for $200. That was worth me not getting greasy.

gotcha
yeah the waterpump is the reason...it's been sliding off right after the pump
it was almost all the way through the cover...no idea how i didn't notice it!

so i'm kinda stuck...to take the pump out do i need to take out the driver side's back cover? how exactly do i do that?!
its much harder than the WRX's

Re: engine sqeak and overheat

You'll have to take off the cam sprocket for that side, then you'll see all the bolts for the rear timing cover and it will be able to come off pretty easily.

Re: engine sqeak and overheat

all the idlers are in a pretty much seized situation...at 135k, it probably means that they are the stock ones...shows that these parts must be replaced every time
didn't expect that so i'm gonna have to wait for the new parts to arrive

so when i finally replace the belt, can i start it up without the radiator for a few seconds to see if it's working before i put it all back together?

Yes. I've always done that with no ill effects.

Re: engine sqeak and overheat

ok people
i successfully changed it...that was hard but worth it
so how can i be sure that it's done right? is it enough that it starts and check engine doesn't light up?
also how can i make sure it's not starting to slide off again?

and there were lots of small metal particles in the coolant! something to be concerned about?

Re: engine sqeak and overheat

Just a thought on the water but in my celica, my coolant was low and i guess when i would stomp on it i would hear the water rushing back ( maybe in the heater core) but i topped off the coolant and bled the lines and it stopped.

First fill the block directly through the upper radiator hose until full. Then connect the hose and fill the radiator. It is very easy to trap air in our engines. If you just filled the radiator up I would say its very realistic your coolant is low.

Re: engine sqeak and overheat

sounds like the belt has too much slack and is hitting the cover. did you change the water pump, idlers, and tensioner? it's possible to have the belt in time when you turn it by hand but excessive slack when the engine is running that will slap the belt around. i would take the cover back off and run the engine without it to see exactly what is wrong. take another video with the cover off and someone can help you out.
