Neutral position(inhibitor?) switch question.

Last week, I had my new ECU Tune transmission installed at my local Subaru shop. The front diff on the old one bit the dust.
I took my car back in Monday morning because some of the shifter position indicators didn't match like they used to. (I'm pickey )
After 2 hours of adjusting the cable to get a few lined up, they were stumped. (P,R,N lined up, the rest are way off. And no start.)
So they put it back to the way it was so I can drive it.
The bad tranny was a newer version replaced by a dealer.(I have paperwork) The new one was an older version.
Was there a difference in the neutral position(inhibitor)switch between early and late model years?
Thanks.
