92 Stalls and immediately restarts

My 92 stalls at speed, sitting still, speeding up, whenever. It dies with no warning and then immediately restarts. It will go weeks with no problem, then die 4-5 times in a day. Any help is appreciated!

I would suspect the MAF sensor.

My Claret is doing exactly the same thing. On rainy days it can stall 3 times in 10 miniutes.

Re: 92 Stalls and immediately restarts

I suspected the MAF. I checked for codes - none. Is there a way to check if is the MAF before I throw several hundred on a MAF?

Doubtful if its that intermittent. Given the almost 1 to 1 correlation I have seen here regarding your symptom and what it turned out to be, id try to source a used MAF from another member here. You can try cleaning it first if you want though.

Re: 92 Stalls and immediately restarts

I had the same issue with random stalling and immediate restarts. Was the MAF. Replaced with new Subaru part, no more stalling. Try cleaning with CRC mass airflow sensor cleaner first.

Re: 92 Stalls and immediately restarts

I seem to have the exact same problem. The car will be driving fine and then just stall out and I have to stop and restart it. Usually it will then drive fine. Sometimes it immedietly stalls again though and has to be restarted it.

I have removed and cleaned the MAF. I have made sure the connection to the MAF is good. I have tested the MAF with a multimeter and it seems to be getting power.

What else could this be or should I assume it is the MAF and buy a new one?

Re: 92 Stalls and immediately restarts

You can try opening it up and re-soldering it, the instructions are in the how to documents. It is pretty easy to do, and it completely fixed my stalling issues.

Re: 92 Stalls and immediately restarts

Could you point me to it. All I found there was the "How to clean the MAF"

Nevermind. It was in the cleaning document.

Had the same symptoms so I soldered mine from the DIY and works perfect. I will have to find it for you.

Re: 92 Stalls and immediately restarts

A further development. Now it seems to have a very erratic rpm at low speed. Like it's having a hard time idling. The idle speed also seems very slow.

I tried cleaning the ICU by spraying some maf cleaner in the tubes and that seemed like it helped for a while, but it goes back to being very rough and hesitant a bit afterward. Could a dirty or malfunctioning ICU make the car suddenly stall out of the blue?

Does this still sound like an MAF problem or something else?

Re: 92 Stalls and immediately restarts

Yeah, I think I might try that tomorrow. I found I have a soldering iron. I just need some solder. Never done any of this before though so it might be iffy, but if its messed up whats the harm.

No worries, I never soldered anything before I did mine, but turns out it that it is one of those things that is hard to mess up too much.

Re: 92 Stalls and immediately restarts

Does it matter what kind of solder I get or is it all pretty much the same?
