Everyone talks about it, but how the hell do I do it?

Repack bearings. I got new ones from Timken right here. Do they come apart? I am at a loss.

Thanks in advance!

Greg

Make sure your hands are clean, and you are in a Non dusty environment. Take some of the Bearing grease and place it in your non dominant palm, near the edge, take the Bearing with your dominant hand and press the wide side of the bearing (taper bearings, like wheel bearings, are easier to pack from the larger diameter side) into the grease repeatedly until the grease has come out of the smaller diameter side of the bearing as well as around the rollers, Rotate the bearing (The ENTIRE bearing, not spin the bearing) and repeat until the entire bearing has had grease pushed up through. then install the bearing and make sure your dust caps get pressed on tightly.

Just make sure you don't pull the outer and inner race too hard, you don't want your new bearing to disintegrate. but the seal ring should come out (that is if it has it).

Re: Everyone talks about it, but how the hell do I do it?

that thing seems rather stuck in there. can I put force behind it. I have a socket that fits right on it and can put some power behind it...that ok? or is that a bad idea?

Thanks

Re: Everyone talks about it, but how the hell do I do it?

If it is a Seal that seals the outer and inner race, If it is not a seal, it is the Cage which holds the rollers in their proper placement. so, if it is apparent that it doesn't seal dirt from getting into the Rollers, then it is just the Cage and go ahead with the packing of the bearing, If it does seal it, some have taken a very small drill bit, drilling a hole through the seal on one side, and using a pick, or even a grabber screw to remove the seal.
