flat tire experience

Yesterday I was sitting at an intersection waiting to turn out of the stripmall I was in, onto a relatively busy street. There was a honda accord approaching with her right turn signal on and she was slowing down; in other words, it was very obvious she was about to turn into the lot i was turning out of.

So I decide to go, make my right turn. Well in the middle of me pulling out onto the street, she decides to continue going straight...and not slow down. My reaction is to stay as far right as possible so she doesnt slam into me.

And then, BAM, the front right end of my svx slams into a storm drain and i feel the tire go flat. She just kept on driving which really got me; I realize she really had no reason to stop but...

Anyway, I slowly roll to the next lot I could turn in to, maybe 20 ft away. Pulled into the lot and just sat there, I was afraid to get out and see the damage.

Well the curb/storm drain scraped a nice piece of the lip off my rim, scratched my front bumper a bit and put a hole straight in the tire sidewall.

I proceed to jack up the car with the subaru certified jack that comes in the svx, and within minutes of the car being raised up off the ground, the car starts moving and the jack leans sideways and im back to where i started. Im confused, I set it all up correctly, had no idea what had happened; then i look at the ground...the concrete had been cut into by the foot of the jack.
I guess SVXes really are heavy...
So I called my brother and he brought out another jack and i was able to get the spare on, but the jack he brought dug into the ground as well.

Guess its time for a new rim.

Whats worse is that I just made the car driveable again. It's been sitting for about a week while i waited for new rotors and pads to ship. Just put them on monday night...

The real PITA is having to replace all 4 tires since the flat one looks like its half worn. The rim doesnt look bad from the pics, you might have them put it on the balance machine before they mount the new tire to see if its bent.

I dont trust other drivers, so I wait until they turn in before I go, signal or not. And I NEVER tailgate, same reason.Too many insurance scammers and senior citizens behind the wheel these days. Id rather drive next to a reckless smart driver than a dumb chick on a cell phone or gramps going 25 in an onramp trying to decide what flavor oatmeal to get at the store. God I hate the way some people drive Ok rant finished.

The stock jack is not very good. I used mine only once, flat on a country road in winter. Pull over to the gravel/slush road side, and began to jack the car up. Just got it up and it suddenly slipped sideways and wedged under the front of the car. Called a tow truck and let him do...don't think the jack is all that safe.

I guess I wont' sweat not having one in the SVX, then... but I do need something... Anybody have good alternatives? a bottle-jack and a 2x6x6 lumber, or something?

I probably don't want to haul a trolley jack in the trunk all the time...

There's a few good things to learn in this thread.
1. just because a car has a turn signal on, doesn't mean you are in the clear to pull out.
2. The car is heavier than the jack can safely lift.

I bet it was really hot in Nebraska today. Asphalt gets very soft when it's hot.
I saw a very overweight aunt of mine sink into the pavement with her high heels one day.

i dont think the new way they pave assphalt these days is as good,
my car jack's wheels sunk into my driveway jacking my brother's RSX and the jackstands also made an indent.
And my friend's Ninja 600's kickstand sunk into the ground.

The death jack strikes again. These SVX trunk jacks are awful. I'm really surprised there was never a safety recall for them.

I agree! They are worse than not having one - because you think you have a jack until you need it.

the crap jack sunk into ASPHALT, not concrete

harbor freight has a nice small aluminum "racing" jack that works ok

jack had one wheel off the ground when lifting left rear tire to put it on the front right

their larger unit had no problem lifting the front right

sure is nice to have 6+" of concrete in garage and driveway to work on

try a subaru pantograph jack

svx jack similar in design to that of VW A2 Jetta

My friend has that exact same jack but its a Power fist brand and its friggen light and works like a dream

I used a $20 Wal-Mart scissors jack to lift the whole side of the car at once when I did my rotation..... worked great. My stock hydraulic jack is a bad joke.
