Post Header Wrap

I've heard a lot about the PROS and CONS of header wrap. Is it a good option to replace the factory heat shields or not? It seems it voids any headers warranty, so does a K/N filter on some cars though, so maybe that's because a company will do anything to void a warranty.
After DE-Tuning my air filter system, I put the cone in the engine bay, I thought I'd ask you folks before I destroy my exhaust manifolds as well.

Re: Header Wrap

my first question would be, why? unless your running a turbo, wrapping them on a n/a car will show very little difference if any. more out of your pocket than anything.

Re: Header Wrap

My heat shields are falling off. I had a bad oil leak from my valve covers, and the passenger side split. I'll need to replace it anyway, I assume.

Re: Header Wrap

So I take it there are NO CONS to wrapping versus finding a new heat shield then?

Other than the header wrap holding moisture to the rust prone pipes.

Re: Header Wrap

Cons? As said above, it's pointless. Yes, there are heatshields up and down the exhaust, but they are hardly a critical item. Many, many members have removed them as they start to loosen and rattle, with no ill effects. Wrapping your manifolds will be tricky (they're basically a curved cone shape, so there's no good way to secure the wrap at the thick end and keep it from sliding down and loosening), cost money, take time, and not really get you anywhere.

Re: Header Wrap

The heat shields serve to maintain the temperature of the exhaust gas. This allows the cats to light up quicker. It also keeps the speed of the sound waves at the same speed that the system was designed to run, as the gas cools the speed slows to peak at a lower rpm.
