Anybody have a good source for brake discs?

Took a look at my brakes tonight to find out why the car is so reluctant to stop. I found the pads rusted solidly to the springs. It took a lump hammer and a masonry chisel to move them . But aside from needing new pads and springs, I found that one of my discs has a crack right through it. So I guess I need a new pair of discs too.

It's not all bad. The caliper and the pots slide quite easily with a gentle turn of the G clamp.

So, anybody got a source for front brake discs? I remember a while ago that somebody ordered some and there was some uncertainty about if/when they would ever be delivered.

I think I'll give the EBC pads a try this time, they work well on my Legacy. Or will I get the springs and shims included if I buy pads from Subaru?

Phil.

Cheapest I can find discs so far is £77.96 + vat per pair at www.carparts-direct.co.uk. That's for ordinary steel disks same as original. The special grooved and drilled rice-alloy ones are double the price and probably not worth the extra.

Phil

Last time I looked I could get patern front discs for about £80 each from regular motor factors.......... which was loads better than the local main stealer who wanted £160 each......... so in that light your price doesn't look so bad !!

Thanks for the tip.

I was looking for suppliers in the UK, hence posting on the European forum. I've bought car parts from the USA before and although they are half the UK price, the shipping and import taxes often cancel out any benefit.

Nice to hear from you Phil. How's things? Isn't it about time you got back into the joy of SVX ownership?

I ordered the discs as above and had to buy genuine Subaru pads in order to get the clips and shims. The clips and shims are supposedly available separately but the dealer said there are none in the UK and I would have to wait for them to be shipped from Japan.

The pads therefore work out more expensive than the discs. In the past I've found that the genuine pads work better and last longer than any of the aftermarket ones I've tried. So maybe they are worth the extra cost.

Hi Phil

'Tis true I'd like to get another SVX, Joe doesn't help by offering me cars at such rediculously good prices only a fool or a pauper would refuse. By my reckoning I currently fit into the latter category........... (no laughing at the back !!)

I'm still carrying some excess automotive "weight" at the moment, what with two mini's, the MGB V8 and a diesel Fiat Stilo Multiwagon estate thingy (a good family wagon, different from the Focus/Asthma/Golf etc, and getting 38~40mpg has it's attractions, just don't ask me about replacing HID lamps.........)

Genuine pads ?? The last quote I had for them was £101 plus the Vat........ As I could get some from the motorfactors for £25 I figured even if they only lasted a quater as long then it'd be ok. From memory the other listed applications for that size pad were Ford Explorer or Mavoric or Blazer or something, and the Mazda equivalent, so I thought as those vehicles would be similar weight what with the SVX being a heavy old gal.......... I won't buy "own brand" brakes, they were Mintex branded and worked fine.

Hope you are Bella are well and hear from you again soon.

Phil.

Thanks, Guys.

But shipping for a72# box is VERY expensive!
And believe the UK rear rotors are vented like "our" front rotors.

Hi John,

Going good thanks! How are you?

Thanks for the info. That's a good price for 4 discs. I will give them a call if the ones I've ordered don't arrive.

Phil.

Doing ok, looking forward to getting the 'bus' back on the road after it's winter break and full service.

With the price of fuel cost, I'm gona run my SVX as a fair weather mota and weekends only.....is the cost of fuel one of the reasons there seems to be a lack of activity on the site?

John

John, if I was to take a guess I would say that the reason there is less posting is because we are all smarter and more clued in over this side of the Pond!

We all know all there is to know about the SVX and how to fix it. We even are fairly smart in getting parts or getting service.

I'm joking as you know, but there is a serious side to it. Over in the States, new owners seem to have an average age of around 10, and ask for everything and anything. So lots of posts.

Over here, only mature owners can afford, or maybe only mature owners want, an SVX. These owners are savvy about cars anyway, and possibly they just put the cars into the main dealer for a service, rather than try to fault find or service anything themselves.

That's my theory on the low post count over here. Every so often we get a new member who will post, but many are shy I feel.

Joe

Phil, would you let me know what price you get from them? The Jersey Girl has a scored disk on the back, courtesy of somebody in Jersey driving with a pad to the metal. I could do with a rear pair, but if the price was good I'd replace all 4, just to be sure, to be sure, aye.

I haven't called them. I ordered from carpartsdirect and they arrived this morning. They look good. Total price inc VAT and delivery was about £95.

They list rear discs on their website but don't have a price for them.

Or perhaps it is because while we are only 10, we pick up on things (such as computers and the snazzy internet) much quicker.

Whereas you dinosaurs don't use fancy technology like that too much!
