help very rough idle

got a question here. i have a 94 svx

for a while when it gets really cold my car would start but idle like it's runnin on 2 cyl. i can smell a lot of gas not getting burned

so i tried almost everything tps, ecu, maf, water temp, etc etc i gave up and bought another engine with 80 K from a place that imports em from japan

so after i dropped in the engine did valve cover gaskets rear main seals etc to prevent future oil leaks.,.and regular maintance things like oil change spark plug fuel filter etc

anyways car was running fine for the last month until recently i had some stalling issues which come and go

and now it's now starting properly again. i crank crank it would start run like ****. i give it some gas it stalls. crank crank it starts runs like crap i give it gas and once it passes the 2-3k range it would run fine and then back to idleing fine and afterwards if i turn it off and start again it would run fine

and it seems to happen so randomly. like today it started fine and down the street i try to gun it to make a light and it would cut out and barely make it pass the light it would stall and when i try to start it it would run like crap and after some gas + crank it would be fine again

any ideas???

Have you checked for codes in the ECU?

When was the last time the O2 sensors were replaced?

i haven't checked the O2 sensor actually. but was told by many mechs that the o2 sensor wouldn't cause bad starting. it'll only be once the engine is running and warms up...

also we did a test by unpluggin the o2 sensor and there was no difference...

i haven't checked for codes yet. waiting on my friend being free to hook it up to the comps. but no chk engine light except when it's idling rough which could be just general engine misfire code

only thing i've thought of is maybe fuel pump has a bad ground and cuts out randomly?? or fuel pump relay is going

anyone have this problem before?

cam sensor

A bad cam position sensor will act this way (it did with mine).
But even though the CEL goes out, it is stored in the ECU. Once I read mine, it told me exactly what part to replace, the CPS. Read the codes - they are there and it will help lead you in the right direction.

just wanna give everyone an update

i did a CEL check and it showed up 10 codes
egr valve, oxygen sensor #2,TPS,MAF,cam sensor, water temp, fuel injector #6 etc

so i was like it couldn't possibly be all that sensors went at the same time on this new engine...
so checked all wiring.. couldn't find any problems anywhere
swap ecu and it was all cleared and haven't had the mysterious svx stalling problem since

thanx for everyone's help

Hey Mike

Glad to hear you have the problem sorted. These type of things can drive you NUTS!!

It is actually common for nearly every check engine code that the troubleshooting path is:

Check the signal and the earth for the sensor

Check the wiring to and from the ECU

Check the connectors are good.

If everything checks out, the next suggestion is usually "Replace ECU"

For sure with all your codes coming up together [Christmas!!], your problem was in the 'puter.

A question; you replaced the engine with a jdm import. Did the import come equipped with EGR and emissions gear?

And if it didn't, did you just do without, or port over the gear from your old engine? OK that's two questions.

actually regarding the egr valve. it didn't come with it. i do alot of engine swaps. on my g/f's SUS we just drilled / tapped the block and the egr just screws in and we swap the intake manifold.

i was gonna do the same with this one. but i broke the egr valve trying to remove it from the old engine. so it has no egr. but runs perfectly i'm sure i'll have problems when it's time for emissions but i'll deal with that when the time comes.(probably fake etest lol)

the 3.3 seemed a lil harder to do because you gotta tap 2 holes into the block.

Cool, thanks for the answer. Have you left the solenoid wired up and used the North American ECU? Without the solenoid I though maybe an error code.

Sounds good to me.

If in fact you need to all you have to do is fit a good EGR valve and the system will work like it's supposed to. No big deal.

Good work.
