Q's about TPS
Mourning fellas I have a few Q's about the TPS found in our engines.
Not to long ago I was driving the Legacy and noticed hesitation at Full throttle... I didn't make sence because at half throttle it would run ok but if I brought it at or over3/4 throttle the thing would hesitate like crazy. So I thought the plugs were bad so I changed those out(uhh don't want to do that again for a while) and still the problem persists. The car also idles really high 1500-2000rpms.. So I pulled the codes... (I never hooked up my chk engine light after the swap) So I grabbed my test light hooked it up to the check engine light wire and grounded the diagnostic wire. Sure enough the CHk Engine light was on and it threw to me the TPS code (and a couple other sensors that I found were not propelly hooked in from the swap). Cleared the memory checked the the TPS connection. Started the car drove and the same problem. The TPS code came back. I looked to see how to clean the TPS on the how to's but it was just a blank screen... huh. So I hope you guys can enlighten me on how to clean the TPS. Also If the TPS is just dead (happened on my friends EJ22T that had similar problems as mine) are these things interchangeable from different engines? Could I use an TPS from an EJ22 or EJ18 OR EJ25? It looks Identical to the ones from my other Subarus. How much do these things run? Couple hundred bucks probably? Well thanks guys! ~Jedz

Both of these links in the "How to"work for me...
http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/user.php?How-To|14267 According to the parts sheets, the TPS 22633AA080 is exclusive to the EG33.

That page works OK for me too. You need to have software on your PC that can read pdfs, because that page is a pdf. I'm pretty sure you can get an Adobe reader for free from the Adobe site. Joe

Last time I looked: <$205 plus shipping from subaruparts.com. AutoZone's Web site shows it as a special order item for $169.99. (I'm heading to AutoZone to order one today, as a matter of fact.)
I'd think these things would be more readily available if they weren't SVX-specific. dcb |

I had to download the target link... My browser just wouldn't let me see it. But It's on my hard drive now so I can see it whenever I want.
I am going to pick up a voltage meter today and test and see how bad of shape the TPS is. Well If its scrap I'm going to have to source a new one..looks like I'm going on a looong trip to Burlington's Auto Zone... @ hours from here I think... Thanks guys!

Let us know how the AutoZone TPS works. I've been wanting to replace my 16 year-old TPS and a $40 savings would be worth it, if it works. Has anyone else use the AutoZone TPS with success?

alright I think its time for a new TPS...
So far the cheapest in price is Auto zone at $169.99... I checked loads of places and my local auto parts store sold the part for $281.00.. ouch the best one was $311 from Bond Auto (located in Rutland 15 clicks east of me)... Bond claims to guarantee low prices so when I told them about My local parts store they said they would match it in price...but when I told them about Auto Zone they said they couldn't match if for they would lose money and then suddenly they couldn't match shipped items... oh well. So I think it's a 2 hour 45minute drive up to Essex Junction... I think I'm going to save my self the hassle and order it from Subaruparts.com

92 SVX>Mechanical>Electrical>Powertrain Control>Powertrain Control>Throttle Position Sensor. It's at the bottom of the 4 listed.

FYI...more symptoms you need a TPS-
Funny shift points selected by TCU, usually 2nd gear waits too long to shift under light throttle, then bang shifts into 2nd, in a car that normally has "seamless" shifts. Downshifts also seem to occur early. This along with an idle that changes, but resets itself if engine is turned off and on. There is an excellent how to in one of the lockers, but i can't find it, for checking the TPS with an ohmeter, for breaks in the tracking. On both my 92s replacing the TPU made a huge difference in "drivabilty"

But I did notice the idle is normal when I first turn the car on then it would jump up after I touched the gas... the engine never had these symptoms when I drove the SVX around but I'm guessing that when the motor sat for a couple of months the TPS got fouled. The one thing I have learned about all of My Subies is this... IF you drive them every day they are the most reliable cars ever... But if you don't drive them every day things will start breaking on them. My legacy sat for 2 mos then when I finally got her moving (after the swap) the brake booster went out on it. I know If I just drove it every day it would have been fine. Thanks guys for the info on the TPS but I found one in Rutland for the same price of the one found @ 1stSubaruParts... So I bought it and it will be in on Monday!!! Now I have to find a Brake booster for the Legacy and I will be back in business! So if any you guys live in Southern Vermont I found a place that is cheaper then most!
