Taken by love at first sight

Hi. I'm new here, and right now feeling like the biggest fool in the world. I just bought a 1992 ebony SVX LS-L for my son and I. I loved it on first drive, and wanted a safe car for the teenager to drive, as well as a fun but classy car for me. Thought I did everything right. Had it checked by a mechanic who has worked on them, researched it, called the dealership where it had been serviced (but they weren't allowed to give me info as its now in the Privacy Act here).
Today (less than 24 hours after sale), I thought something was off, and took it to check it out. Seems the rear is binding and the car just has FWD ( a fuse in the engine area to disable the AWD??) I guess I didn't do enough. I wouldn't have bought it if I'd known, and now feel foolish. But I still love its looks, just feel bad driving it. I'm sure there is another rattle that wasn't there yesterday as well. Oh I am upset with myself...no sleep tonight.

Honestly if it's for a teenager, just sell it, they'll destroy it. I'm sick of teens murdering SVXs.

No, its my car, but my 18 year old has use of it occasionally. And he is a car junkie, loves them, and would baby it more than me. He said its a touring car for going around, not a car to race. For that, he needs a Nissan!

Well that's too bad that something went haywire already. Hopefully you get it figured out soon and can go do some more cruising in your new baby!

I am sorry to hear that something was missed when you checked the car out. There is a How-To Doc that explains how to buy a used SVX and what to look for. It is a little late for that now. I would get it checked out and see what is wrong with it. Good luck.

The Subaru Dealership says a new transmission...if they can get one, and then they quoted a bunch more stuff and ended with $4000. I was so upset, I stopped listening! Felt like I'd been punched. I had a couple of thousand for fix up-rotors, tailpipe etc. but not that.

It might not be as bad as you think. Just take it to a trustworthy mechanic who won't bend you over.

Ack!!!

Well, if you're up for a bit of a road trip, there are some guys a little South from you who can do transmission swaps for less than that, and with even better transmissions than the one that comes stock in the SVX. Off the top of my head I think Budfreak, svxfiles and TomSVX do those swaps.

That's my favorite kind of woman.

Welcome to the club, I've had mine for a little over a month now and I'm in love with it. The car needs some work here and there but I'm looking forward to pushing this baby far beyond 300k miles.

Welcome. Don't feel foolish; at least you checked yours out. Some of us found ours on-line and had 'em delivered.

No authority here, but don't let anybody pronounce that transmission dead if binding is the only thing wrong. And remember, it's a 16-year old car that's bound to need a periodic cash infusion for reliable motoring.

Come to think of it, four grand for a Subaru transmission and "a bunch more stuff" is probably a pretty good quote.
