steering/alternator

had this car since july. at first, the steering was very very difficult. then the belt started whining. took it in, tightened belt. all was good. started again. took it in, replaced belt. (oh, battery died between visits, and was told the alternator was bad). after belt was replaced, it was fine again. then it got cold, and it started whining (on exceleration and steering) took it back. he tightend the new belt and it was fine for a long time. now it's whining again, on steering and exceleration). any ideas of what i should say when i take it in again? could it be the atlernator making the steering tight and whiny?

How's the power steering fluid level? If your pump is on the way out that might explain things (heavy steering, whining..)

The alternator is just along for the ride and doesn't have much effect on the belt itself. If the alt. bearings are shot it should be making a rather unpleasant grinding noise.

It's probably not the belt whining; it would screech if the pump or a pulley were binding. An unhappy pump will groan and whine under load.

If it's not just low, try changing the power steering fluid and maybe top it off with a slug of Lucas power steering additive.

now my son can barely steer the car. anyone want to buy a 95 svx? other than the steering, it's quite good. solid, tight. and he keeps it SO clean. (his job is detailing cars - so his car gets great treatments)

Significant Technical Input
Sounds like a slipping crankshaft dampener to me.
