4.44 Swap Questions and Comments

Started the swap this weekend.

Removed the starter, alternator, and part of the exhaust, and flywheel and dog bone.

I was looking around and found that removing the driveshaft does not need to be removed to remove the rear diff. Do i need to remove the drive shaft for the front diff? My exhaust is welded on and I would LOVE not to remove it.

What do I need to remove as far as the shifter linkage as the write up by SVXfiles does not say much.

Any more detailed description for the swap?

Thanks, wish me luck!!!

Thats because you only have to pull the clip and remove the cable from the shifter.

As far as the exhaust you might have a little trouble working your transmission around it. Id remove what you can for more clearance Especially around the rear diff swap.

i don't know about the exhaust because the part near the headers on my custom exhaust clears the trans. my several inches. So, what about the driveshaft? Do I really need to remove it? Final Opinions?

You are replacing the transmission, right?
Once the flange is disconnected at the rear diff, it's only two bolts to get it out of your way.
I like to have as much room as possible when man-handling a sharp edged 250# chunk of aluminum!

i hear you SVXFILES, but I don't wanna take out the custom welded exhaust and the heat shields if i don't HAVE to.

PS- I have plenty of room around the trans. and a trans. jack

Ok.
If it clears the exhaust system then great.
Just support the engine so that it does not shift when you remove the trans.
But I still can not see how you could remove the trans without removing the driveshaft.
I dont remove the axles.
Those I just disconnect from the front and rear diffs.
And then push them out of the way.

I have the record for the longest extension ever.

Breaker bar - 4 foot long hollow steel handle for a floor jack - 3 foot long chunk of broom handle. that's about 8.5 feet. I had to literally twist the steel on one of the lug studs (with the nut stripped on) to break the lugnut off (With a chunk of metal in it) to get the wheel off. I literally twisted the steel lug stud until it heated enough to break.
