California has had a wild hair for smog enforcement for 40 years.

Back in 1966, California's smog system required all vehicles to have AIR (Air Injection Reaction) pumps

The air injection reaction system is designed to supply more air to the exhaust manifold and to actually burn the unburned portion of the exhaust gases. This pump was belt driven by the engine and was equivalent to having an A/C compressor running full time. There was always the temptation to remove this belt since this system, along with the A/C compressor, combined to severely rob engine power and fuel economy. The CHP knew this:

SO

They would randomly set up road blocks on freeways and secondary roads and pull over vehicles at random into a dedicated lane, under the guise of a "safety inspection". Although they looked at headlights, tail lights, flashers and turn signals, their real interest was under the hood, making sure all the belts were "safe" (translated "were there"). You can see where this is going...

Back then I had a 1966 Corvette, with air conditioning and the AIR pump. I needed the A/C for those hot days but...

So I always carried a broken AIR pump belt in the car with me. When I was stopped by one of these roadblocks (Corvettes set off a red flag) I always told the officer that my belt had just broken and I was on my way to the auto parts store to get a replacement. (I put my good belt on long enough to have the safety order cleared)

The ozone back then, plus my engine heat, must have really attacked the rubber composition of those belts. I was ALWAYS having them break on me

The website states:

"This video has been removed due to copyright infringement."

This statement should be

This video has been removed due to the CHPs fear of the ACLU finding out about it, the CHP has threatened suit against us and we wet our pants as we feverishly went about deleting it."

I nearly did too!

It probably was copyright issue... I've seen special videos like those sell for over $1200 a pop . a bit more than $20 for the new releases most consumers go for.

Stupid video... If I lived in cali i would plan on buying a metro tomorrow so I don't rack up the speeding tickets for owning a car that could potentially break the speed limit.

Speedklix...Clearly your hampster is illegally modified. The large exhaust tip is a sure sign of tamepring with the emmissions controll systems, and your air intake is illegal. Your red recing vynal CLEARLY means that hampster has been involved in illegal races. Your hampster will be impounded at your expense while we inspect your vehicle. You will have 30 days to reform your hampster to california highway saftey standards

Lol....stupid california.CANCER!

My other car is an autocross car but still street legal (so far) . It is lowered and with an aftermarket exhaust that is pretty loud. It had a cold air intake on it that gave off a nice growl, but was not CARB approved. I got so paraniod about being pulled over that I dumped it and bought a CARB-certified CAI. It pretty much looks the same and provide the same function, but it comes with a CARB sticker and costs twice as much.

If anyone has the video, please send it to me too. Thanks!!!

Matt- that intake replacement was money well spent, if you got pulled ofer before you would have been an illegal street racer, now you are just a driver of a normal car, a law abiding citizen who would never even dream of racing on the street except...maby...you might be a trouble maker because you have that exhaust! You are still an illegal street racer if the cop thinks it is too loud! He dosn't even need to test it, just cite you if he dosn't like you!

Law abiding...that's me Lack of a front plates quickly labels me as a trouble maker.

Sucks that a cop can give you a ticket for having an exhaust that is too loud when it is a judgement call. Most Harelys can wake up the dead and I might get a ticket for having an exhaust louder than stock. Ugh.
