Won't Go To 4th

Hello all. I've been a reader of this site for a while and finally decided to join up. Found some good info here, and now I could use some more. My 1992 SVX has suddenly decided that it doesn't need 4th gear. In 4th at 2000rpm I should be at 60mph. But I'm not. It's got about 110K - 120K (the speedometer's been broken for a couple of months.) It doesn't get driven as much as it used to (hoping to make it a collector car someday). If I flush the tranny fluid & change the filter, will that help?

Welcome to the site. Is your tranny slipping in 4th or not going into 4th at all. Does the engine rpm change when you pull the shifter into 3 from D at those speeds?

It doesn't go into 4th at all. I tried engaging the MANU button and shifting manually from 1-2-3-D, but it still doesn't get to 4th. I've never changed the trans fluid or filter, and it's in the shop now for that (got the car w/25K on it, it has between 110K & 120K now). The RPM increases while in 3rd, instead of decreasing and going to 4th. I know that 2K rpm in 4th is about 60 mph, and that's not happening. I also read the threads about the fluid needing to warm up, but this is after more than 10 - 15 mins has elapsed.

If it is really cold it can take longer than 15mins to warm up.

Welcome to the site. As sad as it is to say, it seems like you've got the all-too-common "High clutch" failure going on. It's probably time for a transmission replacment or rebuild. Do a quick search and you'll find a number of reviews and options. It could be time to "go 5-speed" or maybe put in the lower geared legacy transmission. Best of luck!

mine just had the exact problem. It wouldn't go into 4th, wouuld just stay at like 3000-4000 rpms. Had to get the tranny rebuilt.

Thumbs up

Well, I appreciate all of the information. I had the trans fluid & filter changed, and all is well so far. I'll let you know if it crops up again, but I think that my next move would be to have the brake band adjusted. THANX again to all.
