It's inexpensive to replace if you do it yourself but shops usually charge a lot due to the effort required to get to the belt.

Do you work on your own car? The Integras timing belt was only $30 but it took me the afternoon(mostly cause I ws doing the head too). the SVX is actually easier because if you take out the radiator you have a full 6-8 inches of room to use versus the left engine mount axle... ect.

No I don't work on them much, just oil changes, replace a few hoses, but nothing too complicated. I just had the garage do the timing belt on my 4cylinder Camry and it cost $300. I just purchased the SVX so I don't know when the belt was last done. If it is going to cost $300 I am going to have to put it off for a while.

It's very rare to see a Subaru timing belt break, even if it's WAY overdue. The older Subarus (Loyale, XT) did not do so good with timing belts, but it's not common to see a Forester, Impreza, Legacy, or SVX break a belt.

Our 88 Justy broke a belt after 140,000kms/87,000mi or so. We put in a replacement and kept on going. There was oil on the belt that probably shortened its life.

The timing belt on my '86 GL wagon (which my then-wife and I bought new) broke somewhere around 50,000 miles, and apparently this wasn't an isolated incident, because later we received a letter from Subaru stating that they would pay a mileage-based, pro-rated reimbursement for timing belts that didn't make it to 60k. I sent them a copy of the receipt and got a modest check.

I'll bet they never did that with toasted SVX transmissions.

Of course it will be expensive to replace......It's an SVX!...Bet on the dealership charging you at least 600.
