Surging, poor milage and octane knock, oh my!

My car hates me....

It can't tell if it wants to hightail it off the line or think about it for 2 seconds (Yes, I've done the ECU crush mod) I'm getting 10 mpg in town and 20 on the highway, and on moderate acceleration I can hear pinging (very quiet)...

What gives? Do all of these problems sound related?

And advice is appriecieated....

I would check the vacuum hoses and maybe the boot air intake. Try the least expensive first. At times hoses have come loose. The boot air intake has cracked where the hoses attach (was able to repair it with JW Weld for now).

By NO means an expert, just trying to help...

You're running premium, right? Lower octane runs hotter, which can cause more knock.

Try resetting your ECU and let it re-learn with some premium gasoline and see if it goes away. Also, do you have escessive lifter-tick? That noise can be picked up by the knock sensor and your engine will pull timing because it thinks it hears knock.

Don't run regular, its always been premium... no lifter tick, but the octane knock seemed worse today...
