OH yes that is a pretty ugly sight. I remember that when this board was about a year old someone else posted pictures in their locker with a destroyed front dif. It looked worse than yours.
I am wondering if it is possible to get a new set of front and rear differential gears that are currently being made for a current Subaru with a ratio close to the SVX? Then maybe it would be worthwhile to get the rear diff rebuilt with new gears and the front diff rebuilt with new gears at the time the transmission is rebuilt. Sort of a long way to go to get a "real" two year warantee.

The part number is wrong on Subaruparts.com. Double click on the hypoid gear set (first part on the list) and it takes you to a page where it shows $0 for total and a red X next to quantity, indicating the part may not be available. Notice the bulletin number next to the part number (PT280397). Now type in 38100AA551 in the "add another part" box. Notice the same bulletin number. That bulletin explains that 38100AA170 has been changed to 38100AA551.

Wow. That shipping cost is crazy. By the time you add shipping the price is almost what list price is

I just tried ordering that
new part # which is the 3:545
ratio, so will see if it shows up. Retail was only $389 which isnt too bad. Labor would be around $500-800 easily thru most shops I imagine

$2081.42 for a new front dif including ring and pinion, bearings and shaft including labor. I got the fwd gear ratio because i dont plant to ever have this car awd again.
had mine for a month and it snapped in a parking lot coasting, thankfully i wasnt on the interstate or something cuz it stopped the car cold in its tracks and almost put me in the dash.

I wonder how long I have before mine goes. It's been running FWD for over a 1 1/2 years and 10k miles since the rebuild.

Rebuild Costs
"how much does a tranny go for iam in socal oceanside what do you sell them for ?"
It cost me $3100 including replacing a broken tranny mount to have mine rebuilt here in S.D. That includes the whopping 2 yr./24,000 mi. warranty good at dozens of tranny shops around the U.S. WGJ |
