Is it true? Did you old farts have it this bad?

I've heard the rumors about getting up to change the TV channel, and walking uphill in the snow 10 miles to snow...

...but did you actually work on cars without PB Blaster?

How did you do it?

We broke a lot of bolts.

We broke a lot of knuckles.

We tore a lot of skin.

Take a look at an old mechanics hands some time, they look like they been through a war.

old school

Don't forget the best old-school way to loosen rusted bolts pre-PB Blaster: the oxy-acetylene torch.

Not only did we get up to change the channel (and adjust the horizontal hold), but there were only three channels. And you forgot the part about having to bust firewood and slop the hogs every morning before setting off to school in the snow. Uphill. Both ways.

I've never heard of PB Blaster and d it to confirm my guess. Dad taught me to use WD-40.

Well, that's true. There's nothing like torching a bolt on a VW engine, and wondering about the magnesium content of that alloy block...

I have to agree with that.

Johnny (I guess around these parts I really am considered an old fart)

Ahh...I remember having only 4 channels...ABC, CBS, NBC and of course the local PBS station. I also remember the black and white TV days.

1964...if my rapidly failing memory serves me that's the year my girlfriend (Sandy) put up posters of George Harrison in her room. I couldn't decide if I should be jealous, or just think she was dumb to think he would come to our town and sweep her off her feet.

WD -40 and busted knuckles. In a pinch we'd use the old tin man style oil can and some 30 weight. I still have scars. I actually have a chunk of rust from my suby wagon permanently embedded under the skin in my right arm. (and I'm not that old either)

4 channels (and PBS, but I don't even count that one since nothing was ever ever ever on)
We were watching a black and white with knobs to change the channel until about 1990. I guess we were behind the times.

Sunday mornings were the worst. No cartoons, church on every channel, and a telethon on PBS.

Hauling firewood, feeding the chickens and geese, weeding the garden, picking the apple, peach, prune, and pear trees.

All uphill. Both ways.

and we hadn't even dreamed of the svx yet....

Cool

Not that I would ever admit to being as aged as the fine wine I consume, but I recently donated my family's first TV set, a 1949 Silvertone (Sear's house brand) console, to a local museum. Before there was PB Blaster, & WD-40, there was 3-in-One penetration oil. I still have a can of it. Squirt this stuff on a balky bolt & a week later you had a fighting chance.

Ron (fondly remembers TV test patterns).

OK, who remembers the "jet planes" up into the sky at the close of the programing day( you know,LATE, like at like midnight,)
The networks played the Star Spangled Banner and the anouncer, (pre-recorded) talked about "touching the face of God".

Thats right, NO 24 hour TV !

It was a simple time, when parents beat their young

and if you gave your neighbor a concussion, it was not a matter for the courts.

I used to love the smell of 3 in 1 oil.

Hey youngsters - can ya believe oil used to come in cans! And we had to punch a spout into it before we could spill it all over the lanwmower.
