Changing my ATF...

Well, it's 2005 and my current ATF has been in my car for ~6 months and 6K miles, but as 2005 will be filled with drag racing and AutoX, figured it was a good idea to start the year with some fresh ATF flowing through my 4.11 trans.... (checked my trans dipstick today and the fluid is still as pink as the day I put it in after my 4.11 swap).

I'll be doing the fluid change tomorrow morning, and picked up a funnel, 6 qts of Valvoline Dexron III ATF and 1 qt of Lucas trans additive from my local Advance Auto Parts store earlier this afternoon.

I plan on following some advice from Lee posted in a previous thread - where he can consistently drain 7 quarts of ATF by jacking the car up on the passenger's side (opposite side of the drain plug).

Advance Auto Parts on-line store is www.partsamerica.com and you can find the Lucas *juice* among the transmission additives:

Trans Additive

You can either have the bottle shipped to your local store or to your door. Costs $8.48 for a 24oz bottle.

Chike,
You might also consider replacing the internal filter/screen in the trans - unless you know how long it has been in there . You'll have to drop the pan, but then you'll drop at least 8 quarts out...

Guys there is something interesting about the tranny, you state that it takes around 6 quarts of oil at every change (the ATF), the last time I changed the oil the car took only 3 quarts no more!! I even took the pan out and cleaned the oil filter. At first I managed to empty around 2.5 quarts of the old ATF... I couldn't believe it! so I started the car for about 5 seconds without having the pan neither the ATF filter, I emptied around 0.5 quart... I waited around 30 mins after, no more ATF got out of it (you will tell me that maybe the car was running low on ATF before the change, but it wasn't the case in any way because I checked it before the change). Could it be that Subaru had made another tranny version especially for the hot Middle East? (some cars are especially made for that region for example the chevrolet Lumina...)

North American transmission spec per the owner's manual:

overall capacity -- 10 quarts U.S.

drain/refill -- 2.6 to 3.2 quarts

My transmission is from a '96 Impreza Outback Sport. Not sure if it has the screen, but it has 25-30K miles on a rebuild (done by Huck369). Maybe later this year, I'll drop the pan and take a look to see if it has the screen. Today, I just want to do a drain and refill...

That's the Lucas Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer. I don't use that product.

The Lucas Trans Additive is supposed to be good preventitive maintenance by reducing slippage, operating temps, etc.

I've used it since I bought my car at 96K miles, and I've had no issues...

Got started...

And like Lee suggested, I propped the car on a jackstand on the passenger side.

Currently I've drained 6qts and counting...

I'm sure that "drain and refill" figure from the book would be more accurately described as approximate transmission pan capacity.

I believe that all 4HEATs have an internal screen - you'll see it as soon as you drop the pan.
