My car did the same thing for about 3 days before the pulley broke in 2 and started eating it's way into the block. I'm glad I bought the extended warranty when I purchased the car . . .

I have one on my car
but ours do have a warranty, maybe everyone who has one on their car (no matter who you got it from) check the bolt tightness this weekend for some peace of mind. Locktight couldnt hurt
either.

this actually doesn't surprise me. What does surprise me though is that it happened so quickly. I'm betting it was not torqued down tight enough. We've got a few people that have had the crank pulley chew through the key and it actually broke! You should be lucky this didnt happen. Do you know how many lb/ft or torque they torqued tbe bolt down to? Why dont you just put your stock one back on?

You gotta torque the hell outta that crank pulley - I had a hard time getting a strap wrench to hold the pulley tight enough to be able to torque it to spec.

Rubber strap that can go around most round stuff to get a grip on it. Sears has them.

tool?

so ur telling me that some people dont use the subaru tool that holds the pulley in place??? it has 4 pin like things that hold the pulley and then u push the crap out of the wrench to get enough behind it u almost need to stand on that mother... so is everyone holding there pulleys with this so called rubber tool from sears that has a good use for oil filters only?

I'm not sure who else is using a strap wrench - I only use it to put the pulley back on - I don't think you could get it tight enough to break the pulley free - that's what the starter is for

Hrm I almost got one for my oil filter, but I didn't see any real value at the time.

Subaru quoted me at somewhere near $220 dollars for a new pulley. Eff that man.

I just remembered I did use it on a v-8 jeep cherokee to break the crank pulley free - so maybe it could be used to break it loose on the svx.

They come in different sizes - the oil filter ones are much smaller.

yup. you can hold it enough to apply the torque to spec when putting the pulley on, but you'll never be able to get it off using the strap wrench. i'll also recommend the starter to get it loose.
