VA or MD members

I'll be near Leesburg VA for a two week training class from 19 Apr thru 30 Apr. My employer (the Air Force) seems to think they can teach this old dog some new tricks. I think they're out of their mind, but....

It's going to be just like I was back in middle school, we even have a field trip on 26 April, to Antietam Battlefield.

So, anybody know any good things to see/do in the area on the weekend (24-25 April)?

I know the usual like the Smithsonian, etc. I lived in the DC area for a few years in the mid-80s - first at Crofton MD, then at Aquia Harbor VA (just south of Quantico).

edit: Sorry for the mis-post, guess this should have been in the not-SVX forum

Thumbs up

Lee, assuming you have a chopper at your command on the 25th, why not set it down in Silver Spring, close to Rt29 & New Hampshire Avenue, where upon the WSSC facility parking lot, an autocross will take place. Featured at this gathering will be Harry's (newsvx) red beast, and a bevy of Harry wannabes, including me, & a few other names you'd know from this group.
I know Crofton fairly well. From what section/street did you once hail?

Ron.

I used to live in Herndon, VA for two years and moved away just last June ('03). The new Air & Space Museum is open in the Dulles Town Center area.

Other than that, if you want to have a crazy night on the town go to the Adams Morgan area in DC, but if you want something more refined check out the restaurants/ clubs in the general vicinity of the Washington Monument/ national Galleries.

Oh btw, parts of Manassas have developed into very quaint little spots. You can find bars and restaurants catering to all tastes from jazz to poetry reading.

Have a great time!

this sounds fun. what is a "WSSC" and is it easy to find given Rt29 & New Hampshire? And if by a chopper you mean POS compact-sized rental car, then yes I will be mobile. Hours (AutoX is early down here)?

Crofton: My brain isn't as good as it once was (and it was never that good), but I seem to remember Swinburne (sp?) Ave. I was only there for about 4 months in 1984, renting, until I bought the place in VA.

In Aquia Harbor I lived on the corner of Dewey Dr and ??? - there goes my brain again - automatic shutdown when it overheats.

I recommend a cooler for brain overheating. A wine cooler, that is.

WSSC is Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission - It's a semi-abandoned site with a big 'ole parking lot that the local Mercedes-Benz club uses to prove WRXes can whoop most Teutonic products. I notice that Leesburg is right on the path from Harry's new nest in Stephans City, VA. Perhaps I can alert Harry that you need a lift.
Seriously, we'd love to have a Floridinian SVXer join the fun. And, yes, they start in the wee hours of Sunday AM. You'll have to cancel church.

Ron.

I expect to be there. looking forward to putting faces with names.

edit: I'm guessing I should take 29 off 495, then what to do at the intersection w/New Hamshire?

Assuming you'll be heading northeast, crossing over the Cabin John bridge on 495, you'll take 29 (Colesville Rd.) north off of 495, & eventually cross over New Hampshire Ave. Take a right at the 2nd light (I believe) past N.H. Ave, on Industrial Parkway & drive a couple blocks straight 'til you dead end into an open chain link gate at the facility. Take a right after the gate & wind your way all the way to the back of the complex. If you spot an SVX or two, you'll know you're there. I'll PM you later with my cell # & any more details needed. Be sure to rent an STI so you can give Harry a good race.

Ron.

Got it, thanks. Printed out a Microsoft Streets & Trips route sheet. Program claims 55 minute drive, which I'm guessing is OK for a Sunday morning.

Sunday morn coupled with an STI equals 30 minutes tops.
Start your engines!

Hey Lee. Since Ron never seems to get there until after lunch time, I'll send you a PM with my cell phone number as well.

Look forward to meeting you.

Very funny, Mike. I may surprise you this time, as I'm bringing the blue beast. That's right..... the S( )X.
Be very afraid.

Ron (revving the 4 banger).

So are you actually going to race it Ron? Your 240 is in G-stock, just like the SVX. I would think it could be pretty competitive in that class, but I haven't driven one for a long time...

Bring an extra helmet for me.
....and a blindfold for you. You're ridin' shotgun.

Should I bring an EMT with me for Mike?

I'll try to be there around 8AM, willing to assist in pit chores or whatever.
