Know any good SVX Mechanics in Sydney

Hi Guys,

Had joined ages ago but only just started looking at forum actively. Read my note in Q&A on Transmission.

Had 3 different diagnosis on a tranny noise.

Car serviced since new by Scuderia in Artarmon and now I am not sure?

Hi Andrew and welcome - glad to see another SVX'er on board

Firstly, stay away from SVM!! Most of the Subaru places that had SVX trained mechanics (Penrith was brilliant!) have now moved on - nothing against apprentices etc but when someone is 'trialling and erroring' on the car, its not worth it! Subaru at Sutherland have a good reputation amongst the Liberty B4 crowd and the fellow who owned my ex-SVX from new had all his servicing done there.

"At about 70K I had the transmission rebuilt - gears slipping etc - the usual!

Now have 110K (kms) and in the last 2 weeks have developed a mechanical noise coming from somewhere in the transmission. On getting to 50km on power up it comes on but taking off power it stops.

Have had the car inspected by 3 mechanics including Subaru service centre. 3 different diagnostics:

1. rear diff
2. gear box
3. front diff
4. also initially told that it was the rear wheel bearings

Who do you believe????

When car up on hoist and in gears, seems there is excessive noice in the rear of gear box (transfer case area)"

Hmm...hard to know without actually hearing it and 'where' the noise is coming from. There are many on here who should have some tips/hints but to eliminate the transmission, I would bring it down to Jim Davies Transmissions in Pendle Hill (Great Western Highway) - they have done a few of the SVX tranmission coolers (including mine) and also some SVX transmission rebuilds - should not cost much to have it checked over - I would strongly recommend a cooler while you were at it.

Also, tell us a bit about yourself and the SVX - how long you have owned it etc etc - would be great to meet up - check my locker for the last meet that we had - 10 SVX's!!

Cheers

James

Thanks for the tip. Very hard to locate the noice unfortunately.
I've had the car since new - 94 with the transmission so far the major work. It was done by Kelly at Torque Transmissions at Chullora. Kelly was an expert but has since sold the business to one of his employees - not sure of his strengths!!

Keep me posted about the next meet and I might see if I can bring my beast along.

In the meantime I'll monitor the noise, wait for some more tips and hope no more damage is being done!!
