Jeep Question: Check Engine Light

Please wont someone end my stigma with cars!! First the SVX now my Jeep! My '97 Grand Jeep Cherokee's check engine light just came on and stayed on, and I have tried leaving it off for a while, and turning it back on. I know very little, but I have no money to go and get shafted by the dealer to turn off the light or check it out. Could someone suggest what this might be, and say whether it could be damaging to the car or not?

Thanks so much -Andrew

Amazonparrot-

Just noticed you're from Charlottesville. I'll be down there in a couple weeks for the marathon. Unfortunately the same day as the Reading meet...

I have a 4.0 I-6 from a mid-late 90's Grand Cherokee in my Wrangler. The only sensor I've had problems with is the O2, but you'll need to get the codes read somehow to find out for sure.

Exactly. You have to get the codes read to get an idea of what to look for. I know around here Auto Zone will plug a scan tool into your car to tell you what the code is, for free
