Subaru hasn't been my first choice for the last five cars I've purchased as they didn't:

1) offer what I needed when I needed it (I bought a VW Passat wagon because the Legacy GT wagon was hard to find with a stickshift and underpowered. They also didn't offer the Turbo Legacy when my wife and I bought her G35.)

2) competitive models better fit my needs (I didn't buy a '92 Legacy Turbo in '96 when I bought my VR6 Passat sedan because I needed more interior room and the car felt less than solid...may have been that particular example. They also had nothing to compete with the Chrysler 300M I bought in 2000.)

3) offer a 3/4 ton full-sized diesel powered 4x4 pick-up (and probably never will )

I've had 2 x 1984 Subaru 4WD Turbo Wagons, each of them passed 300k Kilometers, and probably would have gone farther if they didn't rust away from under me.
One of them actually fell apart while I was driving. I arrived at my destination and couldn't open either of the front doors, so I snuck out the back door and got a friend to help me figure it out, we finally got the one door open, then the other, then car broke in half in front of us, funniest thing I had ever seen.

Anyways, those 2 subys where quick, had room in the back for lots of crap, had on the fly 4wd, were automatics, great on gas, excellent on the dirtbike track(not recommended, see story above), they roll back on all 4's easily, and they look cool....Well. ok, they didn't really look cool, but they were quick.

Tie for 1st -
1. Honda/Acura
1. Subaru
3. Lotus or Mazda

I have 2 Hondas and 2 Subarus, so its a toss up.
As for Lotus or Mazda, both have cars I'd love to have but have no way to afford presently but will within the foreseeable future (unlike Porsche or Ferrari, which, while enjoyable, are not particularly affordable.)

It should also be noted that these choices are not necessarily based on current production cars.

With the exception of the S2000, NSX and RSX, Honda/Acura hasn't really built much interesting since the termination of the 92-95 Civic.

Subaru has had interesting cars for years, though they were generally unacknowledged (as we've noticed.) While some people think that the new Subarus are too mainstream, that’s almost what we need if we expect to still be able to buy one that isn’t a rebadged GM in ten years. At least we can buy a Saab with a Subaru engine now versus a Subaru with an Ecotec.

Lotus built sweet cars back then (Elan – no, not that Isuzu blasphemy, Europa) and now (Exige, Elise.) Though they aren’t terrible affordable unless you happen to love the Europa…and even its not cheap.

Mazda – RX-8: only took a year and a half to start liking its appearance, but I really like it now…now to wait for the Mazdaspeed version. Miata: a lot on the small side, but a great handler and hopefully a good accelerator too with the new Mazdaspeed version.

Well, the redneck in me shall now be revealed.

1. Subaru (duh)
2. Pontiac
3. Chevrolet

All I have ever owned, besides Subarus, were GM cars, and I was very happy with all of them. But, based on the looks of the sweet 307 and downright gorgeous 407 Silhouette Concept, Peugeot may take a run at third place if they ever return to the States.

And, I have to agree with Pockets on a couple of points. Although I love exotics like Lamborghini, Ferrari, Porsche, etc..., I find it hard to honestly pick a car I will never be able to afford as a favorite. And second, I think the first time someone here starts slinging insults because of someones elses opinion, this thread needs to be locked for good. We've been getting into that habit too much again lately.

1.) Volvo
2.) Volkswagen
3.) Audi

I have had too many problems with my Subarus in the past few years! I regret to say I cannot put them on my list at all.

Since the inception of the XT6 and the SVX Subaru has offered a premium sports car, now they have alienated me. I have tried a few other products but they seem like they don't care about there customers most of the dealers suck and I am tired of the game they seem to be playing.

Just my $.02

Nothing against the SVX...

Ditto. Except for the redneck part. Pontiac has no association with such.

My list:

1. GM - mostly Pontiac (they just make cars that are easy to love)
2. BMW
3. Infiniti

It must be noted that there is quite a distance between my first place and second place choices. I love BMW's for their styling and substance...but they are just too weird in function. Infiniti is much more fluent, but lacks a little in quality.
