As for the ford gt thing, lame name since they lost the rights to call it GT40; so just GT? oh well, I would take any Porsche GT2, GT3, Turbo, or Carrera GT {YEAH!!!} or even a Lambo. Aston Martin is better, even though they are under ford's rule. If I'm going to spend that kind of money {which I don't have} the last thing I'd buy would be something with "ford" on it. At the Philly Auto Show they were going on and on about how great a car it was in 1968. Alot of cars were great in 1968. That's ford's problem. They live in the past. Notice all of thier "new" great cars are all repo's of old cars? T-Bird, Mustang, GT, etc.. Lame.

For a while I felt bad for kinda hijacking this thread, but I don't think my hijack was quite as extreme now.

I think correctly pointing out that ford is living in the past is far from being sour. I think it's sad that they have to revive 30+ year old car designs to be "new and exciting". That is lame.

But it's hardly a new idea, and Ford didn't think of it first. Car manufacturers have certainly tried to appeal to their customers' nostalgia before.

"Correctly" is your opinion, and that's fine.

I see no problem with riding on tradition, especially when "retro" is in. Ford isn't the only one who does it. To me, reviving a retro design is much better than never changing a design for 30 years.

Yes, true, true!

The only reason Japanese car makers aren't "going retro" is because all of their old designs are far from legendary or classic, at least in the American public's eyes.

Yes, Japanese cars have arguably always been more reliable and "better" cars, at least from the 80's on, but there have been no models from the past that stand out as memorable or what people would call "cool". Really only recently (10 years or so) have real cool potential classic models started to come out of Japan.

I have to differ with that statement.... Don't forget about the Datson Z series cars of the 70's ...
Now those are classics!!!

(I still love my 1957 Chevy hibernating in a garage)

Right, and the new 350Z recalls a little bit of those early Zs.

So, will the RX-8 be "retro-worth" in 30 years?
