there was also a difference in spring rates that was discussed in the fact that it seemed like USDM SVXes got lower spring rates than european... this was discussed i believe between trevor and porter... i think

I wouldn't really call it a discussion

I found a SVX for sale in Australia... Hope it is still there when I get back there!!!! That sucks, I'll have to sell my 1995 5 Speed for a 1992 in Australia... well it'd be worth having one of the 250 ever imported into the country (Australia)

Thanks, Andy. I haven't seen that diagram before. So instead of a hydraulically-operated transfer clutch, you guys have a center diff with a clutch-type LSD. Pretty cool.

I understand why the US SVX was tuned to be more front-drive biased - but it seems like Subaru went through an awful lot of trouble to do so.

Can you elaborate a little more? Like, what fewer parts? Why less heat? They were AWD overseas too. So, is it a simpler system like the manual tranny WRXs viscous coupling?

(I saw that diagram in the last post...i'm a little too blonde i guess, not good with diagrams lol)

The USDM SVX uses an electronically controlled clutch pack alone to control the torque distribution in the center diff. This clutch wears out over time because it handles all the torque distribution. The center diff on non-USDM SVXes is a planetary gear mechanism along with an electronically controlled clutch pack. The planetary gears handle the majority of the torque distribution, so, the clutch lasts longer.

I take back my statement about heat generation. Under normal driving conditions, the USDM center diff will not generate significantly more heat than the non-USDM center diff. The majority of the heat generation is due to the torque converter which is the same on both cars.

You see why I always argued the drastic diffrences between the diffrent SVX's... It seemed like so much trouble to give us our version SVX and give the rest of the world thier version... Why not just make them all the same??? I really think that Subaru had no idea what the US wanted before they relised the WRX over here... They kept all the cool cars over seas.( I'm not complaining because I grew up around them in Australia) I'm just saying... You're right when ya said that they went through alot of trouble to give the US thier own version of SVX.... Alot of pointless work if you ask me... I think we should have all gotten the same one...

Yes they do have transmission problems. So do the UK models.

Before buying our SVX, we looked at 10 different SVX's around the '91-'93 age group (some JDM, some UK). Probably 50% of the UK models had records of transmission work in the history. The JDM cars don't generally come with any service history.

Our '91 JDM car melted it's transmission 5 months after we bought it. At the time, it was 8 years old and had done about 80K miles.

Maybe later cars were better. Arthur610 and Phil Hill don't seem to have had any problems with their UK models.
