WTB: GOOD rear suspension components
I have ridiculously saggy rear springs, and I'd like to get new ones and put them in over Christmas break. I want used ones from somebody here. I realize it's dumb to put used parts on a used car, but I don't care. I can't afford an entire new strut assembly, and when I do I will be going with a set of coilovers, not the stock ones. So, does anyone have a really good, sag-less set of rear springs they'd be willing to part with? I'm not paying an arm and a leg for these things. They're only $70 a piece brand new from Subaru. But, considering my struts, mounts, etc are all 21 years old, I'd rather just get by than putting new parts on a crappy strut.
Also, if anyone have the entire strut assembly (tower, spring, mount, etc) let me know what you want for that as well. I'm really tired of people asking me if I have a lowering kit on the back.

Re: WTB: GOOD rear suspension components
I have my stock rear springs but I think my might've been sagging course with blown struts they could have been the cause.
$40 + shipping sound good? I'll add a pic you decide if they sag This was taken shortly before I put in a set of motorsport lowering springs, in late 2010 I believe. I do have good top hats but the struts are shot. Last edited by 92 SVX; 12-09-2012 at 09:42 PM. |

Re: WTB: GOOD rear suspension components
Do you have a picture of the top hats? I'd rather get springs from a 97 since they're 5 years newer. Yours look like they're just about to start sagging.

Re: WTB: GOOD rear suspension components
Heck, if they're not ruined I'll throw some spray on undercoat and hope for the best.

Re: WTB: GOOD rear suspension components
Are your top mounts rotten through? It is really common. When this happens, car will sit ~2" low. Maybe this is what has happened rather than the springs sagging?

Re: WTB: GOOD rear suspension components
Yes, I can guarantee they are shot. Going over a gravel parking lot sounds horrible. Little driveway bumps are loud as well. I think the car is more than 2 inches lower than it needs to be... I've got 225/55/16's on the stock wheels for winter and the fender is about 1-2" above the lip of the rim. The reason I think it's the springs too is that big bumps sound like the springs are completely collapsing. I think it's the springs and the top mounts both honestly. I don't wanna replace the top mounts and then have the car still sitting that low in the back. It looks really weird.

Re: WTB: GOOD rear suspension components
There is a rubber spacer called the "helper" with a disc called "helper guide" that prevents the spring from stacking on full travel. The rubber spacer tends to split and disintegrate, and the guide disc rots out/away. This is likely the cause of the springs "bottoming". The helpers are ~$20 each and the disc guides are ~$12 each from subaruparts.com

Re: WTB: GOOD rear suspension components
That's a possibility. But my biggest concern right now is getting springs to push the car back up to its normal ride height. I keep bottoming out and it's making me uncomfortable. If newer, stiffer springs (and top hats if I can get some) don't do it then I'll go onto all these little rubber pieces. I just don't want to spend a lot on this soft, comfy suspension. I want to invest in a really nice set of coil overs. Thanks for all the advice though.

Re: WTB: GOOD rear suspension components
I have a '97 with about 74K miles on it, no sag. I'm waiting for my coilovers to arrive from AMR and he said they'd be here by Christmas. When they arrive, I'll have them changed out by my mechanic and sell the originals. I wouldn't need much more than shipping and hassle expense of boxing and shipping. Only problem is timing. AMR just had some problems with shop equipment and there may be a delay so putting them in your SVX over Christmas might not be possible. And shipping might be prohibitive, IDK.

Re: WTB: GOOD rear suspension components
I can't be all that picky. I'd rather wait for a low milage '97's good springs than get a set from a '92 that's going to sag by next winter, too.

Re: WTB: GOOD rear suspension components
My car is doing the same as yours...
My idea was to take the springs off my parts car an weld them on top of the springs I'm currently using so I have twice as much height That should give me clearance to get over the muddy ruts in the driveway
