Legacy issues (coilpack)

I had autozone pull my codes today and found I have a miss on cylinder #2. After a search I found a common issue is a crack in the coil pack. I started it up in the dark and sprayed it with water and found quite a few spots where voltage was arching. One was off the boot on coil to the throttle linkage, One was on the pass. set of wires in the middle where they are secured to the manifold. The last is at the base of the coilpack itself, had a knightrider thing going on between the two mounting bolts. Is it safe to say there are some issues that need to be addressed? They weren't very bright arcs but they were there.

LOL. Yes. That is a very common problem on those. Replace the coil pack and the wires and you'll be all set.

It is strange that it only showed a miss on No.2. as that coil fires the two cylinders, 1 and 2. It may just be the No.2 plug.

The arcing at the coil can be fixed if you look where it is arcing you may see a black track, that is shorting the spark. Just scratch out the mark with a sharp pick and spray with silicone oil.

Harvey.

Re: Legacy issues (coilpack)

I'll give it a try. I'm still weighing my options as far as replacement. OEM, aftermarket, Neon, Used etc..

Re: Legacy issues (coilpack)

Thanks for the offer but I decided to go to the junkyard this weekend. I plan on grabbing some other things as well. I thought the neon coilpack was an upgrade but it's just an urban legend

How does the ecu know there is a miss? What sensor takes the reading?

*edit
I just tried the water thing again and I'm not quite grasping it. I think the coilpack may have been my imagination, but there is definitely some sparks flying around on the drivers side from the plug wire to the injector housing. Is it normal for any voltage to leak when they are wet. I grabbed the wire where it was arching on the injector and could feel current. I guess what I'm asking is if they were dry, would I still be experiencing a voltage leak?

Re: Legacy issues (coilpack)

The answer is yes and no Michael. You could still have current leaking if it is close enough to be attracted to metal when dry or you could be far enough away that your not loosing a spark. Sounds to me regardless you should start with a good wire. Did you swap it with another to see if the miss goes away there or picks up in the other cylinder?
