Safety repairs
So I have no idea whether my airbag works, my auto belts are starting to stick, and it's clear that if i had a front end collision they wouldn't keep me (or more importantly my passenger) from going through the windshield. Is it true that Subaru won't do jack squat to help me?! Should I go to a local indie shop and have them install aftermarket seatbelts? What do you folks think my best options are?

Re: Safety repairs
The airbag works unless the light is on. I say that with 99.999999 % certainty. I don't know of aftermarket belts.

Re: Safety repairs
The airbags should work as long as you don't have a warning light. However without a crash, that's mighty hard to test.
As for the seatbelts; try searching for "seatbelt mods" or something, as people here have found many ways to sort this common problem out on their own. Some have retrofitted the stationary belts in from newer models, or wired them to the rear window switches. The quickest would be the condition that my car came in; get the motor to retract all the way, then disconnect the wiring harness so it stays put. You've got to manually attach both seatbelts whenever you get in, but they'll work when you need it. I had a wiring guru go over mine and get it back to factory operation, but that was a challenge. I wouldn't count on Subaru fixing those parts out of the kindness of their hearts.

Re: Safety repairs
I don't think I'm explaining myself very well. The issue is that both the lap and shoulder belts don't have enough tension or whatever it is to hold a person safely in place. You might as well not even have it on, because you're going through the windshield if you hit something. How is this fixed?

Re: Safety repairs
Dave,
Please explain with more detail the failure of the belts to hold tension. IIRC the lap and shoulder tensioners are different mechanisms entirely are they not? Lap belt tensioner is on the doorsill side reeling to the center, while the shoulder belt reels from the center? I believe I have all the belt and track mechanisms from my '93, in tan color if you determine what you may need. This image may help? Heading up your way tomorrow to visit Sis in Tigard. Glenn

Re: Safety repairs
I could be wrong as I'm not in the car right now but I believe they sense tension. Put the belt on and jab the brake pedal while rolling forward, you should feel it grab.

Re: Safety repairs
hi either way the lap belt is the most inportant ,you say subaru wont help you ?did you contact 1800 subaru3 and ask ? ive seen them help with seat belt problems ,as for the air bag ,like others have said if you start your car and the light goes out ,it should work ,but if you concerned insp it your self and make sure the bag is intact ,inspect the front sensors for damage ,as for the track make sure its clean and nothing stuck in it ,one other thing the belts are inertra belts so they move till gravity locks them
