So it only whines with rpms and not necessarily speed? Does it do it in every gear including park and neutral?

Well, well...

I called it a "buzz" in my post but your description of "whining," or maybe "whirring," sounds just like my problem on my '92 SVX.

It gets louder with higher RPMs.

I suspected the transmission, as it momentarily diminishes at the shift points. I tried some additive, and it didn't do a darn thing.

I have no idea, but it may well be the exhaust. I dunno. The SVX, with that huge muffler, does not sound like any other car. Or like a car at all. More like an electric golf cart.

It's going into the shop next week. We'll see if he finds anything...

what a great thread. i've developed a whine over the past couple of years and now my svx won't even start. i have a battery charger for the camper which i tried to use on the svx last week. it said my battery was good and wouldn't turn over with just the charger connected. starts just fine with connected to another car with jumper cables. at first, i thought it was the battery because after driving for some time, it would start up again no problem. but last week, the instrumentation seemed noticeably dimmer and after letting the car sit for only an hour or so, it wouldn't start again and required another jump. when i got home after a 45 minute drive, i turned the car off in the garage and it wouldn't start. i'm not pretty sure my alternator is shot and when i get it fixed, my whine will go away.

There actually is a gasket called a muffler bearing on the SVX... But I doubt that is causing the whine... PS all the way. Check ur fluid level

wait.. it went away after you took out your Ipod?? Try shutting off the radio in the car all together and it should go away... This is a typical symtom after someone has installed an after market head unit... The is a lack of ground and the speakers actually play by the RPM of the car... Shut the radio off and see if it goes away

I have that same ipod adapter and it causes a "whining" noise out from the speakers when its paused and it gets higher pitched the more I press on the gas.

Welcome to the world of aviation and our shielded spark plugs.

It is possible for the current running through the ignition system to cause interferance with the audio system, I've heard it in planes with poor shielding. Cars have more sophisticated ignition systems and that generally takes care of interferance, but it is possible.

Going out on a limb: If it has to do with the iPod, is it possible that the iPod cable itself is acting as an antenna, picking up and amplifying the interferance?

<edit> never mind, everyone beat me to it lol... I've had the iPod tape adapter whine on two different cars, including my first SVX with the stock head unit. Cleaning the tape deck heads helped a little bit I think... might have just been psychosomatic though.
