Do you really have to drop the rear frame down to get it down far enough to get the cover off?

Has anyone in WA done this before? And if so, would you be willing to help out? Ill buy you a case of beer lol, but thats about all I can afford
I also need to put in a new rubber tranny mount thing. I think its bad as well. I would also like to replace the internal tranny filter, put on a new pan gasket, and also put on a new oil pan gasket. But thats a lot of work for one day, and deserves a lot more than a case of beer, lol. One thing at a time I guess. Let me know if anyone is up for it.

Its easy enough. Double so if you have a floor jack to support it, though you can do it by hand.

Well, Ive never messed with anything at that end of the car. I do have a jack, I dont have ramps. And by all means, have no idea how to get the thing out. Those pages out of the manual just went over my head.
By what the manual is showing, you have to take the whole rear end apart. It doesnt show how to lust get it off the car enough to take that cover off to change the gasket. I dont want to deal with taking out the axles, if thats possible. I dont know, I dont really know what Im talking about I guess.

I'll look at my FSM but on the other subarus you drop the drive shaft, undo the two nuts to the rear diff cover. then place the jack under it to support it while you remove the front 4 bolts.
supporting the back of the car on a set of jacksands should be good enough, though for doing much work under a car I usualy use 4 stands and support the car level securely so that even if you get to yanking on it it won't fall off. |

yup, thats what the FSM shows, only in the SVX you have 4 bolts holding a small crossmember that the front of the diff is bolted to instead of 4 bolts through the front of the diff up into a subframe like other subarus.

So, all you have to do, is unbolt those 4 bolts from the cross member, un bolt the two nuts at the top of the rear, and it will come out? As simple as that? What about the bolts, whats the likelyhood of them breaking off? Ive already had a couple do that on this car.... I dont want to take the chance with something like that......

I've never had one of the bolts mounting the rear diff break off, if your sockets are not that good they might round off... Sometimes the stud in the rear diff cover will back out of the cover instead of the nut losening, but its not a concern, you just have a bolt then.
its fairly simple just time consuming as getting access to lower the driveshaft out of the way requires dropping the exhaust pipe according to the FSM. |
