Sensors in exhaustpipes

Hi,

I have a question about the sensors in the exhaust pipes. I have a EG33 engine from a 1991 JDM SVX. In the exhaust pipe are 2 sensors ( 1 left and 1 right), these are the "lambda" sensors or o2 sensors. 20 cm further there are another 2 sensors in a sort of small muffler left and right. What are these sensors and what are they for?

Thanks,

Peter

Peter, it is a little difficult to understand exactly what you mean by this question.

To the best of my knowledge, there are only 2 in total O2 or lambda sensors, one right and one left.

Now these two sensors are connected into the first catalytic convertor in each exhaust line. They might look like small mufflers, they are actually small cats.

The car has three catalytic convertors in the system. There is one each side in the exhaust pipe coming back from the "headers", the exhaust ports from each head. Farther back where the two pipes merge into one, there is a third catalytic convertor there as well.

The O2 sensors are plumbed into the two initial catalysers. This is where they take their readings from.

Where are you seeing two other sensors? I find this bit hard to understand.

Joe

Hi Peter,

Just to add to Joe's comments, I've had a look at both the official Subaru parts list and service manual I have, and neither are showing anything more than the two O2 sensors that Joe has mentioned

Well, there can actually be 3 of the O2 sensors.

The later models [like Arthur's Polo Green] that have OBD11 diagnostics, they run a more sophisticated system. It has the usual two sensors like we have, and an additional "after" to see how clean everything is burning up.

But Peter's engine is from and early JDM car, and would only have two O2 sensors.

maybe i must make it clear.
As seen from the engine there are two pipes, on every side there is mounted a 02 sensor. But in the pre-cat there is another sensor. So On both sides, i have the 2 o2 sensors, and 2 other sensors. That makes 4 sensors. Nobody knows what they are for.

maybe this will help.

Thanks,

Peter

Can you post up a picture of it Peter?

What colour and numbers of wires are coming from these sensors?

Is it possible the O2 sensors burned out on the car, and the owner could not extract them because they were seized solid in the sockets? And then a new pair were soldered in and connected to the ECU, with the old original pair not now connected up to anything?

It is hard to figure out.

Joe
