Help if someone can

I got this 92 that has got me stump a little--This is the problem when going around 65 or around 55-the car will just hiccup a little and go on but then it will keep doing this ever so often.I can mash the gas down and it will just keep going without no problems until i stay around that speed--- NO lights no codes or anything--City driving nothing goes wrong--idles perfect. I can't check anything out without a code or something that i know of. Does anyone have a suggestion that i can go on and try. I don't want to take it to the shop because all they will do is put parts on that i don't need until they figure it out so i might as well do it myself and save if i can get a hint on where to start at.
Thanks Art

How often does it happen? Is it getting worse? Does it happen at higher speeds? Can you duplicate by inducing a load at a stand still (brake & gas but don't do this long)?

It does it at steady speed any speed above 55--goes a few miles and then again--city driving ok---idles perfect--no codes or lights falshing. just a hiccup and goes on,mile a 2 and goes again. if i mash the pedal it just goes with no problems runs right up there. but when i get it backdown to speed it starts again. No worse stays the same it has been doing this for a few days now.
Hope this explains a little better

I'm willing to bet this happens at lower speeds as well but is hidden by the fact that the torque converter is not locked.

Your saying it is the torque convertor or possible. because it is a new one from factory but that don't make it good. This is a reman from factory

No, he's saying that the engine may be hiccuping at slower speeds also, but you don't notice because the slushbox absorbs the sudden drop.

Where does one look for the problem--A starting point is what i am looking for. without a code or anything it is just a guess for me .I would like to start at the most likely cause of problem if possible.
Thanks

How consistant does it happen? It sounds like a sensor is starting to fail (Cam/crank or even MAF).

What you described was the first symptoms when my MAF started acting up. Driving along at highway speed there was a loss of power for a split second and then it would keep going. Mine did not do it consistantly, only sometimes. Then after a while it started dying when i was stopped at a red light / stop sign etc.
I have a How To document in my locker to clean the MAF, you could try that before spending any $$$.

Also i remember talking to my Subaru mechanic once (loooong time ago) and he had mentioned something about a timing belt jumping one tooth which might cause similar symptoms. More knowledgeable people can chime in here.

Good luck

I am going to try the cleaning first and go from there. It just hiccups that split sec and goes for 4 or 5 miles and it does it again, I don't have any stalling or any idle problem. When i get on the gas it kicks butt with no problem or driving in the city-- just open steady speed on open road.
Thanks all ---we will start there--I do that in the AM and see what goes from there.

I wouldn't rule out that it is just your torque converter lock cutting in and out. Happens sometimes as you are just rolling along when not really applying any extra throttle to accelerate. Ussually happens at speeds closer to 45 -50 mph

Same

I clean the MAF and TPS and senser and timing belt and still does the same thing on open road---i am realy stump on this, the shop said it could be the trans converter locking and unlocking for the split second. so back to subaru they put it in over 5 grand so i guess it is there to play with now--Unless someone can add something else to look for. next week to bring it in, i don't want them to but warranty is good, but if it is not the trans i am in for a big bill for sure. I will let al know next week how all goes
Thanks all

All went good for the trans was told could not find out why it does that---converter ok----Well i went and read the codes with the blue wires and i get a code 41 which says something about the learning center. What do i need to buy for this to fix that code or is there a fix. I replace the MAF --TPS and all coils and what is next to do----I got so much in it now i got to fix it
