In all seriousness, I know a few guys with EVO's out here and they are quite capable, and the mods are cheap and effective. Either car would be lots of fun!

I'd say go with whichver makes you happy .

The only thing i remember reading on the nasioc forums is that mitsubishi's warranty is not very good/non-existent when it comes to fixing factory defects.

That was one of the only real arguments I remember that you'd be better off with the STI, other than real world daily driving.

Good timing. I test drove an Evo IX MR this afternoon. Here are my thoughts:

- Good seating and control layout.

- When the motor is off boost, it would be fine for daily driving.

- Tires are noisy (although not more noisy than the tires that were on the '05 LGT that I test drove last year).

- Brakes are a bit noisy. Its not a squeal but rather a mild grinding sound. Kind of puzzled by this.

- Taking into account the noisy tires, at highway speeds, the interior noise is not any greater than my SVX.

- Suspension is firm. It feels fine on relatively smooth roads. Rounded edge bumps cause a smooth but firm reaction. It would probably suck on the roads that I drove in PA when I picked up my SVX back in 2002. The SVX wasn't particlarly enjoyable on those roads either though. At this point, I'm undecided if the suspension is smooth enough for my expectations for daily driving.

- The Evo that I test drove was actually slightly used (4500 miles), so the salesman let me romp on it a few times. It was of course quick, but it wasn't as quick as I expected. There's a nice rush when the boost hits at about 3000 rpm, but after that, its almost a let-down. This would be easy enough to fix though. By most all accounts I've read, $1000 invested in the motor will net another 100 hp.

I really like the idea of having a four door AWD rocket that can be daily driven, so I need to check out other suspects before I decide on an MR (or if I'm going to buy a car at all.) Next step is to drive an '06 STi, an '06 REX, an '06 LGT, an '06 LGT Spec B if one is available, and '06 MazdaSpeed 6.

Good list of cars to test-drive. I'd be interested in hearing your opinions of each.

I'm definitely very pleased with my '06 Rex and with another $1,500-$2,000 in mods should have a solid upper 12 second car (Cobb Stage 3 AP, used VF-39 turbo, larger TMIC & catted 3" down-pipe). As the '06 Rex comes w/ a catless up-pipe, 550cc fuel injectors and a larger fuel pump than the '02-'05 Rexs, no other mods are necessary other than those I've listed. This should put an '06 Rex in the 250-260+whp range, and with a $300 dyno-tune & reflash, add another 15-20whp.

Thanks Harv. No real plans for it at this time. Want to keep it stock to compete in SCCA D-stock autox this season. Just enjoying the ride for now.

Didn't take long for the bug to bite.

Hahaha... Harvey got you there, Chike.

Those cars on your list are a pretty (seemingly) enjoyable bunch. I would never have thought you'd be one to get rid of your SVX for something else. Those EVO's are quite capable, but as far as I can tell, don't have the fit and finish of the STi's. In my opinion, the STi easilly wins the looks category, and those turbo boxer 4's sound absolutely phenominal!

I'd say go with whichever floats your boat best... but keep an SVX in the stable.

BTW... Chike apparently loves Mitsu's more the Subies now....

The bug has definitely bitten, but I won't do anything major for at least another 7-8 months. Plan to just stock-pile parts and wait until the Fall/Winter to do a massive install.

Far from...far from. I admire the Evo and would be happy to own one - but I'll take a Subaru anyday. Remember I just spent 23K on a new '06 WRX TR. For that money I could have bought a nice low mileage '03 Evo or an '04 with slightly higher miles. However, with the '06 WRX improvements and better everday driveability, I was happy with my choice! Plus I was able to show my support to the one car company I truly believe in!

P.S. I know you were joking Insanity...

Taking the couple of months to save money rather than sell the svx? We will probly forgive you for buying a Mitsubishi if you keep the SVX

Its going to be a daily driver. I had one out on a test drive last weekend, and they are surprisingly smooth. Not quite as many amenities as the SVX, but I'll deal with it.

I have to wait a month to pick it up because that's the soonest I can fly down to California to pick it up. I would love to keep my SVX, but I need to sell it to help pay for the Evo. However, after seeing that new thread about the SVX being worth $2.8M in 2021, I may have to hold on to it. ;-)

Thanks Chike. I agonized a bit over buying this car instead of something a more practical such as an LGT wagon, but in the end, I knew I wouldn't be happy unless I had a chance to own an Evo IX MR.

A LGT wgn? If you went with a wagon I see you more as an '04-'05 FXT kinda guy!

The Evo MR is one amazing car and it'll be quite some time before you're able to fully utilize and harness all of its abilities. Great choice and congrats again!!!
