The L and LS use one pump the LSL uses a differnet pump...

Try some Lucus Power steering fluid additive first....

I've always wondered about that. So they are not interchangeable?
I thought I had a new spare sitting on my parts car.

Before you replace the pump check out the power steering O-ring fix in the how - to lockers.

What are the symptoms that lead you to believe the pump is bad?

Some pumps do go bad, but it is far more common for the O-ring to go bad than the pump itself to be bad and the O-ring is a very cheap and easy fix.

i'm not sure what would be causing your power steering not to kick in until 1k rpms other than the 2 main parts of the system (p/s pump or rack & pinion unit). isns't there a sensor on the lsl models (not sure what that does)?

Talking I might know~!

Lookunder the car at the rack and pinion assembly there should be metal tubes (or piping whatever you want to call it) going across the assembly. Look at the tubes and see if any are bent or squeshed? if they are thats your problem!
