I have never changed the filter screen in the transmission. Ive heard of people cleaning the screen before but never changing it. How much does it cost to get ot cleaned or replaced? Is it easy to do? I was going to buy the permacool filter not the subie one. I dont feel like dealing with out dealership here. They didnt even know what an SVX was. Makes me scared to go to them so i decided not to lol.

A few of us have changed our screens in our group out here in WA. It is not that hard, but just a little tricky getting the old one out. It allows more transmission fluid to come out. It is around $35.00 for a filter and gasket kit (come together). The few that we have changed were very dirty. I think it is because the cars never had a filter on them.

35 dollars isnt a bad deal at all. I would be more than willing to do that. Are their any directions on how to do this? I wouldnt be doing it myself....im gonna ask a friend or two to help out. I can buy the filter from the dealer right or subaru parts?

Having just done it myself, it's fairly straightforward. What you'll probably run into is the parts guy/gal asking you which filter kit you need. Turns out there are two different "shapes" to the main housing (the tube that goes up into the trans is the same diameter/length for both) Go ahead and buy both kits and just return the one that isn't the right match for the one already in the transmission. There is one piece of metal tubing that runs across the filter housing that you'll have to pull out (gently) once you've removed all the bolts (they're all the same length). Be careful of the additional ATF that will drain out while you're removing the screen. It should take 7-8 quarts of ATF to fill the trans back up once you've got the pan bolted back on. Make sure to run the trans through the gears as you're adding the ATF.

I started by adding about six quarts before starting the car then warm it up while adding the rest. Slowly go from P to 1 and back then add some more fluid when the car is completely warmed up the fluid should be exactly at the full level on the dipstick, no more no less.
A tip for getting the tube out that runs across the trans filter... wiggle one side then the other but both have to come out at the same time. and don't over torque the trans pan bolts you will warp the pan and have leaks.

He's referring to the external Subaru tranny cooler that mounts near the radiator on the driver's side.
