Temp placement

hey...
working on putting in the tranny cooler and temp gauge. where is the best location for the temperature sender?
i didn't order the filter kit that includes the temp hole in the top. is it worth drilling and tapping? what over options are there?
how about the temp sending unit for the car? where is this located? it the warning light doesn't come on till 300degrees...could i just use those wires and take the bulb out? or replace that sending unit?
i know some people put it in the drain pan, but i dont have access to a welder right now to secure a connection in there.
whats the easiest solution? anybody have pictures of locations?
thanks
jake

You can install a tee in your filter line. If you do that, be sure to ground the gauge sending unit, or it may not work. I will try to post a picture of one that I did for someone.

Earl's advice is good.

your alternative is to drop the pan and drill out a hole - the temp gauge I bought came with a setup that did not require welding in the sensor plug.

I don't believe you can use the built in sender as it's a NTC thermistor with a curve that doesn't match any gauges (that I've seen anyway).
