My 1st Post - I Want Your Advice
Hello everyone. I would like to say that I am very pleased to join this forum. I want to buy my first SVX and would like it to be an AWD SVX and so I have some questions.
1. What is the best year for the SVX? 2. What options or option packages should I look for? 3. How many different colors leather interior are there? 4. Other than the transmission, wheel bearings and brakes what trouble spots should I be looking for? 5. Where do these cars rust first? 6. Which years have the black roof? Thank you in Advance |

My two cents: 1) There really is no "best year", but people do have their preferences. I for one don't like the 92's because the early trannies were prone to failure....the trannies did get better as the years went by, although none of them are bullet proof. I also like the central door lock switch found on 93-97 models (the doors will also automatically unlock when you open it from the inside, a nice touch that is missing from the 92's). 2) Leather interior and AWD are real nice to have. Since most SVX's had these options, finding one should be easy. 3) Just two: beige and dark grey. 4) The things you mentioned are the big items you should be aware of. You can usually tell if a car has been beaten...stay away from abused SVX's! 5) SVX's that are cared for don't tend to rust easily at all. However, I have seen a few with rust in the same area: just above the plastic cladding on the doors. 6) Only the 92's had a two tone option with the black roofs. Dave |

Re: My 1st Post - I Want Your Advice
Now my turn
1. I've own a few of them in the past and driven a decent amount of them. 92 are ALWAYS quicker. I've had my fair share of trouble with trannies on 94s but all of my 92s had strong trannies that are in them since day one. One of them had 140k and the other one I drive now has 178k so trannies are a crap shoot. 2. 92s have LS and LS-L. 93s are all LS-L. 94 has L (FWD), LS, and LSi and LE. 95 have L (some FWD), LS, and also LSi. 96 and 97 are L and LSi. Do a quick search for what they come with. Spoilers are always optional. 3. See answer above. But Dalye from Motorsports warehouse have a few colours you can choose. 4. Diff fluid and seals around powersteering, valve cover and head gasket. 5. They should not rust at all if they are taken care of nicely. 6. All 92 apart from Teals have black roof. 93s are all barcelona red all over. 94s have pearl white with black roof.

Welcome to the site. There is a chart that shows all of the options in the How-To Documents (link on upper right hand side of the page). Good luck.

1. What is the best year for the SVX?
The newer the better. I loathe the early ones with the passive seatbelts. Ugh! 2. What options or option packages should I look for? AWD, sunroof, spoiler, under-seat storage tray. That's about all there was. One in a million has the electric seat heaters, but I think that was only available on other continents, along with the center differential, remote headlight aim adjustment, and a few other oddities. 3. How many different colors leather interior are there? This has been answered. I wish black had been an option though. 4. Other than the transmission, wheel bearings and brakes what trouble spots should I be looking for? Drooping sun visor, no AWD (rear wheels ain't workin'), broken CD player, broken cruise control, sticky sunroof, worn out hood struts, yellowing headlight lenses, torn center console near the storage compartment hinge, wobbly center console, vertical scratches on the moving side windows from dirt on the alignment pads, and some other things I've overlooked to be sure. These are all SVX unique things. Check for the usual things too, of course. 5. Where do these cars rust first? Underneath. I wouldn't really know, but I have an east coast car and it suffers from minor oxidization pretty much everywhere. The paint is faded. The intake manifold is white from corrosion, the electrical connections are all weak, and the anti-sway bars, exhaust, and hubs are all slightly rusty. Not bad really, but definitely not clean as my west coast car. 6. Which years have the black roof? Just the early ones. I think it looks cool, but unfortunately it comes with a black trunk and spoiler too, which I don't think looks quite as good. ...unless the whole car is black. Then it's sexy. Good luck on your search. Take your time. |

Welcome and good luck in your search.
1) The best year is the year you own. Well it's like the other replies. 2) The LS-L or LSI gest you the speed sensing rack and pinion, sun roof, heated outside mirrors. 3) Only those two. 4) Head gasket. 5) Rust is not very common if the salt gets washed off on a regualr bases. However I have seen it in the rear upper strut mount, high pressure PS line in back of the engine, wheel wells and radiator or ac condensor. 6) Yup the 92
